PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Felipe Rodrigues (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Craig Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rodrigues comes to the cage accompanied by icc - melhores na porrada. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Craig Patton was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Felipe Rodrigues!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Craig Patton!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Frank Dennis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rodrigues throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Patton's waist but Patton gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Rodrigues off to one side.
Rodrigues lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Rodrigues shoots in and drives through. Patton sprawls well.

Rodrigues closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Patton holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

Rodrigues is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Rodrigues is breathing heavily.
Patton is trying to control but can't.
Rodrigues looks to land a strike but Patton avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Patton pulls Rodrigues in close to his closed guard and prevents Rodrigues from doing any damage or advancing position.

Patton looking for a guillotine here but Rodrigues defends easily.

Rodrigues postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Patton is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Rodrigues, into his guard.
Patton not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Rodrigues throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Patton stands up and waves to Rodrigues to follow him.
The crowd cheers as Patton lands an impressive looking overhand right. Rodrigues doesn't seem phased though.


It looks like Felipe Rodrigues has been cut.
A bone on bone clash there as Rodrigues blocks the leg kick.
Felipe Rodrigues seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Patton clinches.

Patton manages to break the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rodrigues takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Rodrigues looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patton is fending him off so far but Rodrigues persists. Nope, Patton circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Felipe Rodrigues. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Patton misses with a low kick.
Patton lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.

Patton throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Rodrigues's head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Patton darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Rodrigues is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Patton cracks Rodrigues with a big elbow.

Let's hope that Patton has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Rodrigues throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.

Patton stands up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rodrigues tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Patton counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Patton prevents the takedown attempt.
Rodrigues has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Patton avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Patton connects with a knee to the head.
Rodrigues is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Patton pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Rodrigues is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Patton's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Patton's back!

Patton wants to improve his position but Rodrigues is controlling well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rodrigues seems to be working for a kimura but Patton defends the submission attempt.
Rodrigues thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Rodrigues tries to clinch up

and Patton counters by clinching up.
Rodrigues tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Rodrigues has Patton pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Patton manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Patton turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Rodrigues is looking for a sweep.
Patton is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Rodrigues will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Patton connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Rodrigues some visible discomfort.
Patton avoids the strikes from the bottom by Rodrigues.
Rodrigues tries to buck Patton off but Patton is having none of it.

Patton decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Patton has closed the distance and engaged Rodrigues in a clinch.
Rodrigues has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Patton is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Felipe Rodrigues. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Patton has Rodrigues pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Patton pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Rodrigues tumbling to the mat - Patton dives into Rodrigues's guard.

Rodrigues has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Patton is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Rodrigues.

Rodrigues changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Patton fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Rodrigues drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Patton manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Rodrigues has Patton in his guard.

Patton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rodrigues keeps working.

Patton decides to stand up.

Rodrigues shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rodrigues throws and elbow that misses. Patton uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Rodrigues's guard. Nice move by Patton!
Patton lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Rodrigues working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Patton doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Patton manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Patton drops back looking for a leg! Rodrigues is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Rodrigues manages to kick Patton off! Patton jumps back into Rodrigues's guard.

Rodrigues has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Patton can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rodrigues has his foot on Patton's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Patton works his way back into a safe position though.

Rodrigues has an active guard here but Patton has managed to pass into half guard.
Rodrigues throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Patton decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Patton tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Rodrigues is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Patton knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Well Patton has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
