PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Seth Smolka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lee Pierce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Seth Smolka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Lee Pierce!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Elvis Blanc and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pierce will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Smolka misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Pierce.
Smolka leaves Pierce with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Smolka enables Pierce to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smolka manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

It looks like Pierce might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Smolka will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Smolka is looking for a triangle but Pierce pushes his legs off easily.
Smolka has a closed guard, preventing Pierce from standing up.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Smolka wants to control but Pierce passes easily into half guard.
Smolka keeping hold of Pierce's head, controlling as best he can.
Smolka is trying to control but can't.
Smolka is concentrating on defense, preventing Pierce from advancing position.
Smolka gets full guard.
Pierce's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Smolka working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pierce doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pierce manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Smolka is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Smolka on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Smolka tries to get out of the position.
Smolka manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pierce manages to get himself to full guard.

Pierce bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smolka's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Smolka is on top in guard.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Smolka looking to sit in guard and control but Pierce gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Seth Smolka will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Smolka tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pierce sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Smolka somewhat.

Pierce gets tackled into the cage by Smolka. Smolka maintains the clinch.

Pierce shoots in and bounces Smolka off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Smolka is wriggling around but Pierce manages to pass to half guard.

Pierce is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Pierce is trying to control. Smolka wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Pierce takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Smolka tries to kick Pierce off but Pierce keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Smolka is refusing to be controlled, as Pierce sits in half guard.

Pierce is trying to work for a kimura but Smolka is defending well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Smolka pushes Pierce off looking to stand but Pierce dives back in and keeps control.
Smolka wants to control but Pierce is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Pierce stops Smolka from getting back to his feet.

Pierce is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Smolka doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Pierce.

Pierce looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Smolka moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pierce prevents Smolka from getting back to his feet.
Pierce trying to control but Smolka is working from the bottom.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Smolka fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Smolka stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Smolka wants it to stay on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Smolka gets a takedown into half guard.
Smolka is figuring out what he wants to do next.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Lee Pierce will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Pierce shoots in looking for a takedown. Smolka tries to sprawl out of it but Pierce keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Smolka manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Pierce throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Pierce shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Pierce was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Smolka wants to control but Pierce postures up.
Smolka is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Lee Pierce has got the better of the ground game so far.

Pierce misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Pierce trying to control but Smolka is having none of it.
Smolka tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smolka regains half guard.
Smolka keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pierce is trying to control. Smolka wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Smolka shoots for a double leg takedown but Pierce sprawls well. He's pushed Smolka's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Pierce darts in and clinches Smolka up against the cage.
Pierce is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Pierce gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Smolka regains guard.
Smolka wants to get back to his feet but Pierce passes into half guard.
Pierce takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Smolka manages to get to full guard.
Pierce preventing the sweep.
Pierce is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Smolka has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Pierce should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Smolka has tightened it up now! Pierce should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
