PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Gray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonathan Barret (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jonathan Barret told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Carlos Gray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jonathan Barret!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Chris Edwards and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gray drops his hands momentarily and Barret takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Gray slips a jab and a cross from Barret.
Gray appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Barret gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Gray tries to pull guard but Barret holds him up against the cage and eventually Gray drops back down to his feet.
Barret wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gray has him pressed against the cage.

Gray's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Barret dips to his left and cracks Gray with an uppercut!
Gray walks into a jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barret scores with a shot to the body.
Barret keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Barret moves into the clinch.

Gray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Barret closes the distance and pushes Gray back into the cage.
Gray goes for a takedown attempt but Barret pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Jonathan Barret seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Barret has managed to clinch.

Gray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Jab, jab by Barret - just one landing.
Some wild striking there from Barret.
Gray is looking for a counter combo.
Barret tries for a takedown but Gray sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Gray is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Barret lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.

Barret has Gray up against the cage in a clinch.
Gray changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Barret fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Gray. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jab, jab by Barret - just one landing.

Barret takes the fight into the clinch.
Gray could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gray is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Barret gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Gray is trying to pull guard but Barret turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Barret looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Barret is trying to push Gray away but Gray has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Barret with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Barret ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Barret no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Gray won't allow Barret to sweep him here.

Gray is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Barret is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Barret has escaped and now he's on top!

Barret throws an elbow that misses. Gray uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Barret's guard. Nice move by Gray!

Gray wants to control from the top but Barret keeps moving.

Gray drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Barret manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gray has Barret in his guard.

Gray avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jonathan Barret dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Barret lunges at Gray with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Gray's hand.
Gray leaves Barret with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Barret cracks Gray with a right hand to the side of the head.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Barret, as that shot connected.
Barret fails to land with a series of punches.

Barret has Gray up against the cage in a clinch.

A jab from Barret does it's job there.
Gray takes one to the side of the head.

Barret avoids a kick to the body.
Barret scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Barret takes the fight into the clinch.
Barret has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gray manages to break the clinch.
Barret misses with the combination.
Barret lunges at Gray with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Gray's hand.
Barret lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Barret misses with a double jab.
Gray throws a big counter combination but Barret scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Barret is breathing heavily.

Barret cracks a nice hook into Gray's ribs.
Barret connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Gray momentarily.
Barret dips to his left and cracks Gray with an uppercut!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gray pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Barret moves into the clinch successfully.
Gray has Barret pressed against the cage, preventing Barret from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Gray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Barret clinches.
Gray tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Barret avoids it.
Barret wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Barret creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Gray drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Barret has had enough of the clinch but Gray keeps him there for the moment.
Barret is looking to break free of the clinch but Gray has double underhooks.
Gray can't get the takedown.
Barret prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlos Gray. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gray escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Barret might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Barret fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Gray looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Jonathan Barret seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Barret gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Barret has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
A frustrated look appears on Barret's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Gray tries to score a body lock takedown but Barret shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Gray tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Barret smiles and moves away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jonathan Barret showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Gray's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Barret throws a leg kick but Gray sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Barret shoots in but no luck this time.
Barret misses with a jab, cross combination.
Barret misses with a few strikes there.
It looked like Gray was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Barret.

Jonathan Barret seems to be working more effectively in the clinch in the fight so far.

Gray displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Barret throws out the jab.

Gray lands a nice looking body kick.
Gray looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Barret lands with a cross.
Barret is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Barret closes the distance and clinches up with Gray, looking for a takedown. Barret pushes Gray against the cage but Gray circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Carlos Gray has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jonathan Barret.
Barret takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

and Gray counters with a single leg into guard. Barret didn't expect that.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Gray bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Gray misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Barret closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Gray breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

and Gray counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Barret wants to sweep but no luck.
Carlos Gray overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Barret is working an open guard so Gray takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Gray throws a wild body kick that Barret sees coming a mile off.

Barret clinches with his opponent.
Barret prevents the takedown attempt.
Gray tries to pull guard but Barret holds him up against the cage and eventually Gray drops back down to his feet.
Gray tries to score a body lock takedown but Barret shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Barret tries to break free but Gray pushes him back against the cage.
Barret pushes Gray back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Barret lands a left hand that snaps the head of Gray backwards.
Gray goes for a takedown in the clinch but Barret prevents it.
Barret tries to land knees in the clinch but Gray avoids the damage to the body.

Gray breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nice uppercut lands for Barret. That snapped Gray's head back.
Barret shoots in but Gray avoids the takedown attempt easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Jonathan Barret.
I've got Barret winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
