PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ross Gellar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and JJ Jackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gellar comes to the cage accompanied by Stray Cat Strut. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ross Gellar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, JJ Jackson!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Peter Branson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gellar fails with an attempt to clinch.

Jackson forces Gellar back against the cage and clinches.
Gellar is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Jackson gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Gellar manages to break the clinch.
Jackson blocks a head kick by Gellar.
Gellar throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jackson's waist but Jackson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gellar off to one side.

Jackson forces Gellar back against the cage and clinches.
Gellar gets underhooks to prevent Jackson's takedown attempt.
Come on Jackson - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Gellar is pressed up against the cage. Jackson has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Gellar down to the mat. Gellar avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jackson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Gellar is looking to counter the offense by Jackson and move into the clinch.
Jackson fails to land the takedown.
Ross Gellar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of JJ Jackson.

Jackson shoots in for a takedown but Gellar shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Gellar tries to counter with a takedown but Jackson is quick to defend against it.
Jackson closes the distance looking to clinch
and Gellar counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Oooooh!!! Gellar has knocked Jackson down with a huge combo! Gellar steps away and waves a wobbly Jackson back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


It looks like JJ Jackson has been cut.

Gellar moves into the clinch.

Gellar pulls guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gellar wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Gellar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jackson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gellar swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jackson is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Jackson clinches up with Gellar and pushes him back against the cage.
A body shot lands from Jackson.
Jackson fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Gellar breaks from the clinch.
Gellar misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jackson misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Jackson scores with a takedown into Gellar's guard.
Jackson is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Jackson forces his way into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gellar wants to get back to full guard but Jackson has mounted him!
Jackson tries to control but Gellar wriggling away.
Gellar tries to hold on but Jackson pushes him away.
Jackson controlling the position easily from mount.
Gellar bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Jackson shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Jackson is looking to stall here but Gellar recovers full guard.
Jackson trying to control the position from guard on top but Gellar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jackson is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Gellar had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Jackson defends it easily.

Gellar is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Gellar keeping moving, preventing Jackson from controlling successfully.
Jackson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Gellar wants to get back to his feet but Jackson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Jackson fails with an attempt to clinch.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gellar scores with a head kick.

Jackson dives in and scores a takedown into Gellar's guard.

Gellar pushes Jackson off and scrambles back to his feet.
Gellar shoots and misses

and Jackson counters with a shoot takedown. Gellar fights it but they end up in guard.
Gellar is looking to stand back up but Jackson counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Gellar.

Jackson passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Gellar!

Jackson goes for an armbar but Gellar turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Gellar.
JJ Jackson has got the better of the ground game so far.

Gellar wants to pass the guard but Jackson is keeping the position.
Gellar is working hard here to advance position.
Gellar has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Jackson looking for a sweep. Not yet Jackson, not yet.
Gellar throws a big right hand that misses.

Gellar avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Gellar in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ross Gellar will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Jackson throws a body shot but no joy.
Gellar shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Jackson sprawls well. Jackson wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gellar gets slowly back to his feet.
Jackson tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Gellar throws a leg kick which misses Jackson's front leg but catches the back leg as Jackson tries to avoid it.
Gellar fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Jackson avoids it really well and circles away.

Gellar drags the fight down to the ground.
Jackson throwing strikes from guard but Gellar blocks nicely.
Jackson with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jackson stands up and waves to Gellar to follow him.
Ross Gellar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Jackson chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Gellar can pounce on him.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Gellar.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ross Gellar. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jackson is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gellar's half guard.

Gellar wants to get back to his feet.
Jackson has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Jackson can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gellar is looking to escape.

Gellar wants to hold on but Jackson pushes him away.
Jackson pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Jackson lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Jackson looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Jackson trying to control but Gellar is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gellar is bucking up trying to escape but Jackson cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Jackson swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Gellar is now in Jackson's guard. A big mistake from Jackson there, giving up the dominant position!

Jackson is looking for a triangle here but Gellar uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jackson is trying to control Gellar's posture but Gellar avoids it.

And that's the end of the fight!
JJ Jackson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gellar has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ross Gellar tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
