PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Masakazu Aoki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dan Dority (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aoki's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Sandstorm by Darude. Dan Dority acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 46 - 33 - 2, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Masakazu Aoki!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Dority!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aoki throws a leg kick that misses.

Aoki shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Aoki trying to control the position from guard on top but Dority is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dority is pulling down on Aoki's head. It's preventing any offense from Aoki, at least for the moment.
Aoki wants to control from the top but Dority keeps moving.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Aoki content to stall in guard here.
Aoki seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Dority for as long as he can get away with.
Dority is a very stocky fighter. Infact he's such a weird shape that he's almost like some sort of comedy character - it's hard to believe he's real.

Aoki wants to control from the top but Dority keeps moving.
Aoki is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Aoki postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Aoki might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Aoki is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Dority paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Aoki loads up on a big right hand but Dority slips the punch.
Dority wants to clinch.
Aoki throws a body kick that misses.
As Aoki backs off Dority throws a huge counter combo but Aoki manages to avoid it all.
Aoki throws a leg kick that is checked
and Dority counters with a left and a right that stings Aoki.
Dority keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
A little jabbing left from Dority on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Aoki throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Aoki throws a series of punches but Dority moves out of range.
Aoki misses with a wild combination.
Dan Dority is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Dority misses with a looping left.
Aoki takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Aoki misses with a hook. Dority ducked under it nicely.
Aoki blocks a jab.
Aoki swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Aoki with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Aoki jabs Dority right on the nose. Dority blinks but takes it well.
Dority lands with an overhand left.


It looks like Masakazu Aoki has been cut.
Aoki scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Aoki misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
A nice side step and Dority releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Dority is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Aoki looks to score with a jab to the body but Dority is just out of range.
Aoki darts in looking for a takedown but Dority gets double underhooks and turns Aoki into the cage.
Dority keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Despite the aggression on Dority's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Aoki misses with a right hand
and Dority counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Dority gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Dority throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Aokis head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Dority tries a body shot but Aoki blocks it.
Dority working hard to break the clinch.
Aoki tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Dority avoids it.

Dority has Aoki pressed against the cage, preventing Aoki from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Dority lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Aoki.
Dority can't find room to land a body shot as Aoki controls the action.
Still in the clinch, Dority scores with a nice short uppercut.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dan Dority will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Aoki changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Dority looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Aoki trying to control the position but Dority is working away.
Aoki is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Dority is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Dority sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Aoki is keen to just control but Dority is a slippery customer.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Aoki is working for a submission of some sort.

Aoki wants to control but Dority is keeping him busy.
Aoki is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Dority reverses the position - he's now on top in Aoki's guard.

Dority stands and steps away. Aoki gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Aoki throws a hook to the side of Dority's head but Dority sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Masakazu Aoki seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Dority counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Dority throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Aoki counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Dority connects with a single shot there.
Dority stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

Aoki fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dority sprawls well initially but Aoki persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Dority is looking for a sweep. Aoki is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Aoki is controlling the pace.
The fighters are battling for position here. Dority manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Masakazu Aoki overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Aoki drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Dority dives on top into guard.

Dority tries to stand but can't do so whilst Aoki controls his leg.

Dority moves into full mount! Aoki won't be happy about that!
Aoki is squirming around, avoiding Dority's attempts to control the action.

Dority wants to control the action but instead Aoki gets a body lock and reverses into Dority's guard! Nice work!
Dority has Aoki pulled in close to control his posture.
We've been hearing good reports from Aoki's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Aoki accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Aoki throws a strike but Dority rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Dority wants to stand but Aoki has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Aoki has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Dority gets to his feet - Aoki follows without any prompting.
A slow jab from Dority misses its intended target.
Aoki appears to be looking for a big counter.
Dority is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Dority throws a series of punches but Aoki moves out of range.
Aoki connects with an inside leg kick.
Dority throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Aoki throws the left hand but Dority avoids the punch easily.
Dority has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Aoki finds it's way round the side to connect with Dority's head.
Aoki looks for a takedown but Dority sprawls well.
Dority uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Aoki has time to react.

Aoki lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Dority at a distance.
Aoki closes the distance and clinches up with Dority, looking for a takedown. Aoki pushes Dority against the cage but Dority circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Dority leaves Aoki with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Masakazu Aoki. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Aoki has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Aoki there as he acknowledges the shot.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Dority counters with a nice body shot.
Aoki pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Dority lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
A combination from Aoki does no damage.

and Dority counters with a lovely straight right hand!

And that's the end of the fight!
Dan Dority comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dority has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
