The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Valvarde tries to bum rush Leites with a series of wild strikes but Leites uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Leites displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Valvarde throws out the jab.
Valvarde misses with a low kick as Leites jumps back.

Valvarde swings for the body but Leites moves out of range.
Matt Valvarde seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Valvarde throws a right and a left that both miss.

Leites feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Valvarde gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Leites tries to free his leg and advance position but Valvarde is retaining full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Leites is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Leites drops back looking for a leg! Valvarde is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Valvarde manages to kick Leites off! Leites jumps back into Valvarde's guard.

Leites is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Valvarde is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Leites is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Valvarde is just riding it out for now. Leites eventually gives up the hold.

Leites works his foot free and advances to mount.
Valvarde is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
Leites throws some wild stikes that Valvarde manages to avoid easily.
Leites is trying to take his opponent's back.

Valvarde really wants to buck Leites off and get back to his feet.

Leites has hold of Valvarde's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Valvarde manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Leites is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Valvarde can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
