PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Atlas Kivi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Hunter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kivi kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Metallica - Ride the Lightning. Hunter is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by I'm Shipping Up To Boston. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 21 - 2, fighting out of Helsinki, Atlas Kivi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Justin Hunter!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and .




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hunter throws out a loose jab but Kivi uses good head movement to avoid it.
Kivi swings for the body but Hunter moves out of range.
Hunter just misses with a punch to the body.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Kivi, as that shot connected.
Kivi darts in looking for a takedown but Hunter gets double underhooks and turns Kivi into the cage.

Hunter manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kivi on his heels. He'll look to pass Kivi's guard now, I'm sure.
Hunter won't allow Kivi to sweep him here.
Hunter trying to control but Kivi is working from the bottom.
Kivi pulls Hunter in close to his closed guard and prevents Hunter from doing any damage or advancing position.
Kivi looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hunter is one step ahead there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hunter loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hunter tries to stand but Kivi is controlling from the bottom.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Kivi keeping moving, preventing Hunter from controlling successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Hunter misses with a hook.
Hunter misses with a wild combination.
Kivi staying out of range there.
Hunter looks to score with a jab to the body but Kivi is just out of range.

Kivi tries to sprawl but Hunter drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Kivi has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hunter is working away from the top position though.
Hunter wants to stand but Kivi has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Hunter is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Hunter is trying to work for a kimura but Kivi is defending well.
Hunter seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kivi does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Hunter is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Kivi keeping control of the position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hunter throwing shots but Kivi is blocking nicely.

Hunter prevents Kivi from improving his position.
Hunter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kivi keeps working.
Kivi works his way to full guard. Good work.
Hunter told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Hunter is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Kivi is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Hunter is pushing down on Kivi's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kivi is fighting to maintain full guard but Hunter has managed to sneak the leg through.
Kivi wants to improve his position but Hunter is controlling well.
Kivi gets back to full guard.

Kivi is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Kivi not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hunter stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kivi swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Justin Hunter dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Hunter darts in looking for a takedown but Kivi gets double underhooks and turns Hunter into the cage.
Kivi throws the left hand but Hunter avoids the punch easily.
Good standup being displayed there by Kivi as he connects with a hook.
Hunter stuffs the takedown.
Kivi closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hunter circles away.
Hunter shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Kivi as he jumps to the side.
Hunter fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kivi avoids it really well and circles away.
Kivi tries to counter with a takedown but Hunter is quick to defend against it.
Atlas Kivi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Justin Hunter.
Hunter throws a hook to the side of Kivi's head but Kivi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Kivi looks to score with a jab to the body but Hunter is just out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Kivi counters with a nice uppercut.
Decent striking displayed by Kivi there.
Hunter has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hunter swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Hunter tests Kivi's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Kivi takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Kivi scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Kivi lands a head kick. Hunter smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Hunter takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Kivi misses with a straight right.

enabling Kivi to counter with a crisp jab.

Hunter swings away with a leg kick that misses.

It looks like Atlas Kivi has been cut.
Kivi tests Hunter's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Kivi throws a body punch but Hunter moves out of range.
Nice straight punches there by Hunter. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Hunter.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

It looked like Kivi wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Hunter takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Hunter takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Kivi throws a jab but it's blocked by Hunter.
Jab, jab by Hunter - just one landing.
Kivi throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Atlas Kivi is winning the standup battle so far.
Hunter with a nice cross.
Hunter connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Kivi misses with a straight left.
Hunter misses with a left hand
and Kivi counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Hunter swings for the body but Kivi moves out of range.
Kivi drops down looking for a counter takedown but Hunter sprawls and moves away.
Kivi connects with a nice looking jab.
Hunter ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kivi moves away.
Hunter fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

Hunter gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Kivi to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Hunter manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kivi manages to get himself to full guard.

Hunter lands a couple of decent looking shots.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hunter scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Kivi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kivi is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kivi wants to sweep but no luck.
Hunter throws a big right hand that misses.
Kivi preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Kivi seems keen to control Hunter's posture.

Kivi has an active guard here but Hunter has managed to pass into half guard.
Hunter lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Justin Hunter will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The cut man is working on Atlas Kivi's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Justin Hunter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hunter takes a swing at Kivi's ribcage but misses.

Hunter throws a nice looking combination but Kivi bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

It looks like Hunter is going to stand back up.
Hunter wants to pass the guard but Kivi is defending well.
Kivi wants to control but Hunter is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Hunter not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Kivi wants to sweep here but Hunter controlling him for the moment.
Kivi seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Hunter throws a strike but Kivi rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Hunter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kivi doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kivi manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Hunter bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kivi's guard.

Hunter makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Kivi is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Hunter is trying to control but can't.

Kivi is looking for a kimura but Hunter is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Kivi to get the leverage.
Kivi thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Hunter moves into full guard.
Kivi cracks Hunter with a solid left hand.
Hunter looking for a sweep. Not yet Hunter, not yet.
Justin Hunter is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Kivi postures up.
Kivi throwing strikes but missing.
Kivi trying to control the position from guard on top but Hunter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Atlas Kivi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kivi stands and throws Hunter's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Kivi tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

I would just about give that final round to Justin Hunter.
Well Hunter has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
