PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brogan Kearney (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ryan Hopkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hopkins has chosen "The Red" by Chevelle as his entrance music. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brogan Kearney!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Ryan Hopkins!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kearney gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Kearney wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Hopkins slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Kearney wants to sweep but no luck.
Kearney pulls Hopkins in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hopkins throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kearney lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Hopkins keeping moving, preventing Kearney from controlling successfully.
Hopkins manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kearney manages to get himself to full guard.

Kearney has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Hopkins told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kearney is pulling down on Hopkins's head to control his posture.
Hopkins is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kearney is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kearney working a defensive guard but Hopkins manages to pass into side control anyway.
Kearney tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hopkins wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Hopkins misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Hopkins is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Kearney will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Kearney avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Hopkins.

Hopkins tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Hopkins trying to control the action but Kearney is working from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kearney is trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ryan Hopkins dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hopkins misses with an uppercut. Kearney saw that one coming.
Kearney scores with the left hand. Hopkins knows he should have avoided that one.
Kearney jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Kearney motions for Hopkins to come forward. Kearney throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Kearney fails with the takedown.
Hopkins has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hopkins is leaning against Kearney and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Kearney jumps guard but Hopkins stands there with Kearney around his waist. Kearney gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Hopkins tries to throw a body punch but Kearney avoids it by throwing Hopkins back against the cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Kearney.
Hopkins lands with a light punch inside.

Hopkins prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brogan Kearney. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kearney lands a hook that snaps the head of Hopkins backwards.

It looks like Ryan Hopkins has been cut.
Kearney prevents a body shot from Hopkins.
A right hook to the body lands for Hopkins.
Kearney tries to pull guard but Hopkins forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Kearney misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Hopkins.
Hopkins is pressed up against the cage. Kearney has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Hopkins down to the mat. Hopkins avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Hopkins throws a head kick that misses.
Kearney tries to close the distance and clinch but Hopkins swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kearney seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Kearney scores with a jab to the body.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kearney looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kearney looks to score with a jab to the body but Hopkins is just out of range.

Kearney is rocked!

Hopkins is throwing a storm of strikes! Right hook, left hook and follows it up with a spinning back fist! Kearney hits the canvas like a rag doll! And just like that, this one is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:14 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Ryan Hopkins!
A relieved looking Ryan Hopkins thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
