PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jim Allison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benson Henderson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jim Allison!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Benson Henderson!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Fedor Mirinova and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Henderson fails with a takedown attempt.
Allison could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Allison tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Henderson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Allison won't be happy with that.
Allison can't do much from the bottom here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Allison prevents Henderson from moving into mount.

Henderson lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Allison tries to buck Henderson off but Henderson is having none of it.
Allison might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Henderson tries to move into full mount but can't pass Allison's legs.
Henderson has control of an arm but Allison manages to advance to Henderson's back!
Allison is trying to stick to Henderson's back but Henderson is turning into Allison. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Allison's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Henderson.

Allison is wriggling around trying to escape.
Allison wants to hold on but Henderson pushes him away.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

It looks like Henderson might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Allison wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.

Henderson is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Allison to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Allison shrugs it off.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Allison wants to hold on but Henderson pushes him away.

Allison knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Henderson on the ground.

Let's hope that Henderson has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Allison is looking to get to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Henderson controlling the position easily from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Benson Henderson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Henderson is trying hard to land a takedown here. Allison sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Allison jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Henderson walks away with a smile on his face. Allison gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Henderson dives in and grabs Allison's left leg, looking for a takedown. Allison pushes down on Henderson's head and hops out.

Allison closes the distance and pushes Henderson back into the cage.

Allison wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Allison jumps guard but Henderson stands there with Allison around his waist. Allison gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Allison swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Henderson is trying to break the clinch but Allison has him pressed against the cage.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Allison creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Henderson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Allison tries to avoid it but Henderson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Allison to the ground. Allison escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Allison is looking to clinch but Henderson is avoiding it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Allison rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Henderson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Allison tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Henderson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Allison dominated that second round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

and Allison counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
The fight stays on the outside here - Allison looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Benson Henderson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Henderson misses with a jab, cross combination.
Allison fails with an attempt to clinch.
Henderson darts in looking for a takedown but Allison gets double underhooks and turns Henderson into the cage.
Allison scores with a one two! Henderson had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Henderson tries to keep at a distance but Allison has taken the fight into the clinch.
Allison drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Allison wants to take the fight to the mat but Henderson manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Allison wants to get back to striking at distance but Henderson won't allow it.
Allison is trying to break free.
Henderson makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Henderson has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Allison is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Allison breaks from the clinch.
Henderson shoots for a takedown but Allison saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Allison throws a head kick that half lands.

Henderson scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Allison is trying to escape back to his feet but Henderson uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Henderson grinds an elbow into Allison's temple.
Henderson is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Allison's shoulder. That is not cool.
Allison looks to move to half guard but instead Henderson has passed into mount! Damn!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Henderson stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Allison enables Henderson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Allison manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Allison not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Henderson controls from within his opponent's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Henderson trying to control the position from guard on top but Allison is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jim Allison.
I think Allison has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
