Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Herb Slater (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Volodymich Kovalev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Herb Slater!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Volodymich Kovalev!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Cecil Peabody and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Slater takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.


It looks like Herb Slater has been cut.
The fight stays on the outside here - Slater looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kovalev shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Slater pinned against the cage. Slater gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Kovalev darts in and clinches Slater up against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Slater doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Kovalev has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Kovalev tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Slater smiles and moves away.

Horrible takedown attempt by Kovalev or perhaps it was just good defense by Slater, which made it look bad.
Herb Slater has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Volodymich Kovalev.
Kovalev shoots in but no luck this time.

Volodymich Kovalev seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Slater pushes Kovalev up against the cage in a clinch.
Slater tries to pull guard but Kovalev forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Slater prevents a takedown attempt there.
Kovalev has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Kovalev pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Kovalev is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Slater pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Slater working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Kovalev wants to sweep here but Slater controlling him for the moment.
Slater is fighting to break Kovalev's control of his arms but Kovalev is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Kovalev's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Kovalev is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Kovalev is looking for a triangle but Slater pushes his legs off easily.

Slater could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Slater scoring with some ground and pound.
Slater throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Slater throws a big elbow that misses.
Slater in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Slater postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Slater is looking to work some ground and pound but Kovalev has wrist control.

Kovalev scrambles and gets back to his feet.

Slater has taken the fight to the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kovalev tries for a takedown but Slater manages to get underhooks.
Slater is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Kovalev is defending well for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Herb Slater will probably get the nod.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Slater is trying to pull guard but Kovalev has him pressed against the cage.
Kovalev is struggling to control the position.

Kovalev continues to stall. The referee tells him to work or he's going to break them up.

Slater's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Slater leaves Kovalev with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kovalev throws a leg kick but Slater sees it coming and moves out of range.

Kovalev throws a right hand that Slater ducks under and follows up with a left that Slater also avoids with ease.
Slater displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kovalev.
Slater drops down looking for a counter takedown but Kovalev sprawls and moves away.

Slater manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Kovalev shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Slater as he avoids it easily.

Slater fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Kovalev gets underhooks to prevent Slater's takedown attempt.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Kovalev.
Kovalev lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Slater.
Slater jumps guard but Kovalev stands there with Slater around his waist. Slater gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Slater has Kovalev pressed against the cage, preventing Kovalev from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Slater keeps control of Kovalev as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Kovalev closes the distance and clinches.

Slater has Kovalev pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Slater pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Kovalev tumbling to the mat - Slater dives into Kovalev's guard.

Kovalev has his feet on Slater's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Slater tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Kovalev manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Kovalev shoots in for a takedown but Slater shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
As Kovalev backs away, Slater returns fire with a leg kick that just misses.

Slater seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Slater tries to close the distance and clinch but Kovalev swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kovalev fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Herb Slater is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Kovalev throws a front kick aimed at Slater's knee but Slater avoids it well.
Slater is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Kovalev.

Kovalev jumps guard and drags Slater to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Kovalev doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Herb Slater overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Slater throws a strike but Kovalev rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Kovalev got a little sloppy there for a moment and Slater has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kovalev has managed to get both his arms back between Slater's legs - danger averted.

Slater working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kovalev doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Slater is tightening it up a little... Kovalev has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Kovalev reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Kovalev taps out! Nice BJJ there by Slater!
