PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jamison Byrd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Norbert Fortenberry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Jamison Byrd has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Jamison Byrd seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jamison Byrd!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Norbert Fortenberry!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fortenberry bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Byrd is not content to let Fortenberry control the position.
Byrd takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
You can see the frustration on Byrd's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Fortenberry wants to control but Byrd is keeping him busy.
Fortenberry advances to mount.
Byrd working to try and regain half guard.
Byrd is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Byrd holds on for dear life, controlling Fortenberry's posture momentarily.
Fortenberry lands a big shot there that rocks Byrd but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

It looks like Jamison Byrd has been cut.
Byrd knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Fortenberry on the ground.

Fortenberry is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Byrd to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Byrd shrugs it off.
Oh Byrd is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Fortenberry looking to secure an arm triangle but Byrd defends it well.

Fortenberry stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Fortenberry darts in and clinches Byrd up against the cage.
Byrd seems to have got his legs back now.

Fortenberry pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

and Byrd counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Byrd.

Fortenberry is looking for a triangle here but Byrd uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Byrd wants to stand but Fortenberry has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Fortenberry pushes Byrd off looking to stand but Byrd dives back in and keeps control.
Fortenberry is looking for a sweep. Byrd is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Byrd is looking to stand up but Fortenberry won't let him.

Fortenberry closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Fortenberry lands in his opponent's guard.

Byrd has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Fortenberry off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Fortenberry shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Byrd manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Fortenberry accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Byrd is adopting a defensive guard.
Byrd keeping moving, preventing Fortenberry from controlling successfully.
Fortenberry stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Byrd swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Byrd wants to get back to his feet but Fortenberry is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Byrd seems keen to control Fortenberry's posture.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Byrd tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Fortenberry manages to circle out of the way.

Byrd pulls Fortenberry in to control the position.

Byrd has his foot on Fortenberry's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Fortenberry works his way back into a safe position though.

Byrd drops down looking for a counter takedown but Fortenberry sprawls and moves away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Byrd wanted to stand there but Fortenberry had control of the position.
Byrd has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That's time! Byrd's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Byrd gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Fortenberry to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Well Fortenberry has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
