The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smirnov misses with a leg kick.
Spaletti tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Smirnov lands with a nice body punch.

Spaletti gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Spaletti working for a triangle but Smirnov defends it easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Spaletti is on top in guard.

Spaletti thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Smirnov is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Spaletti tries to free his leg and advance position but Smirnov is retaining full guard.
Spaletti is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Spaletti drops back, looking for a kneebar! Smirnov looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Smirnov looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Smirnov!

Spaletti is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
