PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Todd Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Darius Ellis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Halls of Montezuma. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Todd Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Darius Ellis!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Anthony Taglia and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ellis displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Smith.

Smith rushes Ellis and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Ellis stalling the fight.
Ellis fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Smith managing to block the knees to the body from Ellis.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Ellis cracks Smith with a right hand to the side of the head.
Ellis is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.

Smith closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Ellis swings wildly with an uppercut but Smith uses good head movement to avoid it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Smith closes the distance and clinches.
Come on Ellis - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Ellis pulls guard.
Smith is stalling in the full guard.
Smith preventing the sweep.
Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Ellis has Smith pulled in close to control his posture.
Ellis keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Smith connects with a couple of short punches.
Smith wants to control from the top but Ellis keeps moving.
Ellis has momentary wrist control but Smith slips an elbow through the middle.
Smith is looking to stand up but Ellis won't let him.
Smith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Smith stands and steps away. Ellis gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Smith has managed to clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Ellis sprawls well.
Ellis looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Smith fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ellis sprawls well initially but Smith persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ellis can do anything to dispel that myth.
Ellis has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smith is working away from the top position though.
Smith throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Ellis wants to control but Smith is keeping busy.
Smith drops an elbow to the side of Ellis's head.
Smith wants to free his trapped foot but Ellis is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Ellis is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Smith pulls his head out easily.
Smith is keen to just control but Ellis is a slippery customer.
Smith prevents Ellis from standing back up.
Smith wants to control but Ellis is keeping him busy.
Ellis keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Smith trying to control the action but Ellis is working from the bottom.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Ellis on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Todd Smith dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Smith gets a clinch.

Smith escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Smith is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ellis can do to turn this around?
Ellis darts in looking for a takedown but Smith gets double underhooks and turns Ellis into the cage.

Smith drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Ellis throws Smith to one side and escapes!

Smith darts in and clinches Ellis up against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ellis tries to stall but Smith uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Smith effectively controlling the action here.

The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Smith for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.
Smith has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Ellis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Ellis tries to pull guard but Smith won't allow it.
Ellis is trying to pull guard but Smith has him pressed against the cage.
Todd Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Darius Ellis.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

Ellis stands up and waves to Smith to follow him.
Smith swats away the attempt to clinch by Ellis.
Ellis misses with the body kick

and Smith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Ellis's guard.

Ellis wriggles free and stands up.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Ellis sprawls well.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ellis fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Smith tries to counter by clinching up but Ellis breaks away and moves out of range.
Ellis is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Smith throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Ellis was covering up waiting for the punch and Smith finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Ellis is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Smith presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
Smith fails to pull guard.
Smith tries to pull guard but Ellis forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Ellis jumps guard and drags Smith to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Smith is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Smith stands up and waves to Ellis to follow him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Ellis looking to land some kicks to the body here.

Smith moves into the clinch.

Smith breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Donk. Smith catches Ellis right on the button with a cross.
Smith leaves Ellis with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Ellis gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Smith to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Ellis is looking to stand back up but Smith counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Ellis.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Todd Smith will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Ellis doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.
A little feinted left hand from Smith on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Smith throws a right hand that Ellis ducks under and follows up with a left that Ellis also avoids with ease.
A head kick misses from Smith.
Smith scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Smith fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Ellis, pushing him back against the cage.

Smith's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Smith clinches.
Smith has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Ellis after a bit of a struggle.
Smith is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Ellis gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Ellis successfully pulls guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Smith's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ellis keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith trying to move into half guard but instead Ellis has managed to sweep!
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ellis on the ground.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smith is looking to stand up but Ellis isn't so interested in that idea.
Smith can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Ellis controls the pace.
Smith can't keep his opponent in guard - Ellis advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Ellis seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Ellis is working for a submission of some sort.
Smith tries to kick Ellis off but Ellis keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Smith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Smith thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Smith trying to control from Ellis's half guard. Ellis has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but Ellis is retaining full guard.
Smith stays in close to Ellis's body and controls the position.

Smith wants to control from the top but Ellis keeps moving.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Ellis tries to clinch up but Smith circles away and keeps his distance.
Ellis stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Todd Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ellis changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Ellis manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Smith clinches up with Ellis and pushes him back against the cage.

Darius Ellis has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Todd Smith is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Darius Ellis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith content to stall in guard here.

Todd Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smith, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
