PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Leo Marquis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charles Bennett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Marquis's entrance music is Heltah Skeltah- ruck n Roll. A fine choice. Charles Bennett told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leo Marquis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Bennett!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Gwen Towbar and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bennett lands a nice looking body shot.
Nice defenses there by Bennett.
Bennett unleashes a big counter combination but Marquis bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
A slow jab from Bennett misses its intended target.
Marquis uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Bennett.
Charles Bennett seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Marquis showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Bennett.

Bennett should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Marquis shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bennett but Bennett pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Marquis fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Bennett to the ground. Marquis is now in Bennett's guard.

No joy there for Bennett, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Marquis is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Bennett.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Marquis shoots in for a takedown but Bennett shows good takedown defense.

Bennett ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Marquis moves away.
Marquis swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Marquis shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bennett but Bennett pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Marquis seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Marquis.
Bennett let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Marquis shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Bennett defends it nicely.

We've been informed that Bennett has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Marquis throws a looping overhand right but Bennett ducks down to avoid it.

Bennett changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Bennett is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Marquis rather than just go for the knockout.
Bennett shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Marquis eats them both and turns towards Bennett to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marquis jumps guard but Bennett stands there with Marquis around his waist. Marquis gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

That's time! Marquis's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Marquis jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Bennett walks away with a smile on his face. Marquis gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Bennett throws a right and a left that Marquis avoids nicely.
Bennett lands a nice shot to the body.

Bennett throws an overhand right that lands on Marquis's shoulder, as Marquis tries to avoid the shot.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Bennett tries to keep at a distance but Marquis has taken the fight into the clinch.

Marquis has Bennett pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Marquis pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Bennett tumbling to the mat - Marquis dives into Bennett's guard.

Marquis trying to control the position from guard on top but Bennett is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Marquis lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Marquis looking to sit in guard and control but Bennett gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Bennett prevents Marquis from getting back to his feet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Marquis keeping moving, preventing Bennett from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bennett got a little sloppy there for a moment and Marquis has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Bennett has managed to get both his arms back between Marquis's legs - danger averted.

Bennett is looking to pass into half guard but Marquis pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Marquis is in guard.

Bennett is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Marquis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Marquis working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Bennett's head.
Marquis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Bennett not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
