PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Abdul Karim (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joseph Estrada (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joseph Estrada will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Abdul Karim!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joseph Estrada!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Colin Fray and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karim leaves Estrada with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
It looked like Karim was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Karim looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
No joy there for Karim, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Estrada shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Karim as he avoids it easily.

Estrada shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Karim's guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Estrada stands up over Karim, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Estrada trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Estrada trying to control but Karim is working from the bottom.
Karim utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Karim is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Estrada is controlling him.
Estrada throwing strikes from guard but Karim blocks nicely.
Karim definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Estrada drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Estrada jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Karim might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Estrada with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Estrada wants to control from the top but Karim keeps moving.
Estrada tries to free his leg and advance position but Karim is retaining full guard.
Estrada has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Estrada is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Estrada slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Estrada stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Karim swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Estrada trying to control but Karim is working from the bottom.
Estrada won't allow Karim to get back to his feet.
Karim is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Estrada dives into side control.
Estrada wants to lay and pray for a moment but Karim keeps working.
Karim is trying to get back to his feet.

Estrada has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Estrada keeps the fight on the outside.

Estrada scores with a takedown into Karim's guard.
Karim on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Karim tries to get out of the position.
Estrada works a leg free and moves into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Karim has hold of Estrada's hands but Estrada slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Estrada landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Estrada is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Estrada seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Estrada controlling the action here.
Karim tries to kick Estrada off but Estrada keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Estrada is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Estrada lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Estrada maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Karim could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Estrada has cracked it and Karim is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Estrada!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Joseph Estrada!
In his post fight interview, Joseph Estrada started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
