PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Wiley McCoist (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Putri Natsir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Natsir has chosen Wayan Loceng as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Wiley McCoist!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Putri Natsir!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCoist moves in looking to clinch but Natsir pushes him off.
McCoist closes the distance and clinches up with Natsir, looking for a takedown. McCoist pushes Natsir against the cage but Natsir circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McCoist blocks a head kick by Natsir.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from McCoist.

McCoist has closed the distance and engaged Natsir in a clinch.
McCoist is looking to take this one to the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wiley McCoist. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Natsir struggles to land a body shot inside as McCoist controls his hands.

Natsir breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Natsir keeps control of McCoist as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
McCoist throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Natsir blocks it with crossed arms.

McCoist would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

McCoist wants to control from the top but Natsir keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McCoist stops Natsir from standing up.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Natsir can do anything to dispel that myth.
McCoist postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
McCoist trying to control the position from guard on top but Natsir is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Natsir is adopting a defensive guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
A left lands for McCoist.
Natsir shoots in for a takedown but McCoist shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
McCoist is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
McCoist is looking to clinch.
No luck for Natsir with that takedown attempt.
McCoist turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
McCoist fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Natsir avoids it really well and circles away.

McCoist tries to close the distance and clinch but Natsir swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
No luck with that takedown attempt from McCoist.
Natsir closes the distance and clinches up with McCoist, looking for a takedown. Natsir pushes McCoist against the cage but McCoist circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Natsir throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

McCoist closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - McCoist lands in his opponent's guard.
Natsir wants to get back to his feet but McCoist passes into half guard.

Natsir tries to roll over but McCoist keeps him under control.
McCoist throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Natsir really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McCoist. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

McCoist seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
McCoist thows a huge punch but Natsir dodges it nicely.
McCoist has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
McCoist wants to control the pace but Natsir is squirming around nicely.
Natsir is in all sorts of trouble here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Natsir tries to hold on but McCoist pushes him away.

Natsir can't escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Wiley McCoist will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

McCoist stands and throws Natsir's legs to the side, diving into side control.
McCoist wants to stand but Natsir has his arm trapped.
Natsir tries to get back to half guard but can't.
McCoist is looking to take a break and control but Natsir is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Natsir tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but McCoist wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Wiley McCoist overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

McCoist tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Natsir struggling a bit here.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Wiley McCoist is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
McCoist changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Natsir tries to avoid it but McCoist manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Natsir to the ground. Natsir escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Natsir is trying to pull guard but McCoist turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Natsir breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Natsir throws a lazy head kick
and Natsir takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
McCoist moves in looking to clinch but Natsir pushes him off.

McCoist tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

McCoist darts in and clinches Natsir up against the cage.
McCoist can't break the clinch.
Natsir tries to pull guard but McCoist forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Natsir breaks the clinch.
A head kick misses from Natsir.
McCoist throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Natsir takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Natsir closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
McCoist gets underhooks to prevent Natsir's takedown attempt.
McCoist wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Natsir has him pressed against the cage.

Natsir breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Natsir shoots in but no luck this time.
McCoist went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wiley McCoist dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



McCoist takes the fight into the clinch.
Natsir tries for a takedown. No joy.
McCoist swings wildly with an uppercut but Natsir uses good head movement to avoid it.

Natsir breaks the clinch.
McCoist is looking to clinch but Natsir is avoiding it.
Natsir throws a nice looking combination but McCoist bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
McCoist throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Natsir's waist but Natsir gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing McCoist off to one side.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCoist pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
A solid leg kick lands there for McCoist.
McCoist doesn't manage to clinch there - Natsir circles away.
Natsir misses with a combination
and McCoist counters with a flying knee. Nice.

A head kick from Natsir lands but McCoist takes it in his stride.
McCoist moves in looking to clinch but Natsir pushes him off.
McCoist will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Nice takedown defense from McCoist. No joy for Natsir on that attempt.
As Natsir looks to move away, McCoist throws a big counter combo bu Natsir just gets out of the way.
Putri Natsir seems to be getting the better of the standup.

McCoist takes the fight into the clinch.

Natsir breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
McCoist tries a head kick but it misses.
Natsir shoots in for a takedown but McCoist shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Natsir has managed to clinch.
Natsir is working for takedown but McCoist is calmly controlling the position for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McCoist blocks the strikes from Natsir.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
McCoist thows a huge punch but Natsir dodges it nicely.
McCoist sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Natsir defending well though.
Natsir is refusing to be controlled, as McCoist sits in half guard.
McCoist not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
McCoist uses his free foot to push down on Natsir's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Natsir.

McCoist avoids the attempt from Natsir to control.
McCoist can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Natsir is looking to escape.
Natsir is trying to stand.
Natsir working to try and regain half guard.
Natsir tries to hold on but McCoist pushes him away.
McCoist has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

McCoist is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Natsir has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Putri Natsir has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Wiley McCoist is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
McCoist content just to control the position here.

Wiley McCoist showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for McCoist, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
