Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Avery McCurnin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Avery McCurnin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 14 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jake Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Fedor Mirinova and Ivan Kurochkin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes lands a slapping body shot.
Jake Mendes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Mendes gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Mendes's coach down at Bobby B's Gem was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Mendes's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.

Mendes is looking for a takedown up against the cage. McCurnin gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
McCurnin tries to break free but Mendes pushes him back against the cage.
McCurnin is trying to force a seperation but Mendes has the dominant position.
McCurnin tries to break the clinch but Mendes is controlling the position.
Mendes is trying to work for a single leg takedown but McCurnin pulls him back up using the underhooks.
McCurnin wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

McCurnin throws the kick towards the body but Mendes avoids it.
Mendes tries to close the distance and clinch but McCurnin swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

McCurnin is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

McCurnin is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

McCurnin prevents the takedown attempt.
Mendes has McCurnin pressed against the cage, preventing McCurnin from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Mendes has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics McCurnin uses from the top position.

Mendes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Mendes tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Mendes turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Mendes manages to end up in side control.

You can see the frustration on McCurnin's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Jake Mendes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Mendes.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Mendes drops down looking for an ankle pick but McCurnin pulls his leg out and moves away.

A looping hook to the body misses from Mendes. McCurnin does a little dance to reset his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - McCurnin looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Well Mendes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
