Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Juan Pablo Maza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Wates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Juan Pablo Maza!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Gary Wates!
The judges for this bout are Wagner Zegers, Nard Betker and Patrick Alders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wates moves into the clinch.

Wates manages to break the clinch.

Maza pushes Wates up against the cage in a clinch.
Wates being controlled against the cage.
Wates gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Maza.
Maza drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Wates gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Maza tries to pull guard but Wates holds him up against the cage and eventually Maza drops back down to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Juan Pablo Maza. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Wates jumps into guard, dragging Maza to the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Wates is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Maza presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Wates pulls guard effortlessly.
Wates bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maza's guard.

Maza looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Wates looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Wates trying to control but Maza is working from the bottom.

Wates stands and steps away. Maza gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Maza closes this distance looking for a takedown but Wates circles away.
Maza will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Maza looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Wates is fending him off so far but Maza persists. Nope, Wates circles away and we're back to standing.

Wates rushes Maza and presses him up against the cage.

Wates pulls guard successfully.
Maza won't allow Wates to sweep him here.
Wates has his hands on Maza's head, controlling the position.
Wates bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maza's guard.

Wates passes Maza's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Wates looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Maza wants to control but Wates is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Wates takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Wates is looking for a kimura but Maza is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Wates to get the leverage.
Maza controlling the position for now.
Maza makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Maza.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wates in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gary Wates dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Wates shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Maza but Maza pushes him off and we're back to square one.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maza's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Wates pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Maza gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Maza changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Wates fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Wates tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Maza tries to counter by clinching up but Wates breaks away and moves out of range.
Wates shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Maza sprawls well. Maza wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Wates gets slowly back to his feet.

Wates clinches up with Maza and pushes him back against the cage.
Wates has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Maza is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Juan Pablo Maza has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gary Wates.

With the fighters up against the cage, Maza throws an elbow but misses.

Wates has clasped his hands together around Maza's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

Maza throws Wates to one side and escapes!
Juan Pablo Maza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Wates trying to control but Maza is working from the bottom.

Maza escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Wates gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Wates controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Wates postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Wates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Wates has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Wates trying to control but Maza is working from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wates controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Maza working a defensive guard here.
Wates not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

That was a close second round but I would say that Juan Pablo Maza will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


The fight stays on the outside here - Wates looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Wates closes the distance and clinches up with Maza, looking for a takedown. Wates pushes Maza against the cage but Maza circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Wates misses with a body punch.

Wates gets control of Maza's arms and successfully pulls guard. Wates will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Wates manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Maza manages to get himself to full guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Wates accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maza has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Wates can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Wates is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Wates keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Maza's head.
Wates distracts Maza with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Oh Maza is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Maza has Wates pulled in close to control his posture.

Maza looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Maza seems to have got his legs back now.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Maza wants to improve his position but instead Wates has moved into half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wates working over Maza with some ground and pound. Maza looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Wates is trying to control. Maza wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Wates scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Wates scores with a big shot! Maza's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Maza! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:46 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gary Wates!
An out of breath Gary Wates thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
