PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Oliver Nieves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sun Oku (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sun Oku has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Oliver Nieves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sun Oku!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yukihiro Shimada and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Oku tries to close the distance and clinch but Nieves swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nieves feinted with a counter takedown.

Oku throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Nieves was covering up waiting for the punch and Oku finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Nieves wants to stand and escape but Oku is having none of it.
Oku trying to control the position from guard on top but Nieves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nieves escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Oku gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Nieves really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nieves pulls Oku in to control the position.
Oku trying to stand up but can't free himself from Nieves's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nieves is adopting a defensive guard.
Oku wants to control from the top but Nieves keeps moving.
Oku is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nieves shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Oku defends it nicely.

Oku shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Oku was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Oku is working Nieves over with some ground and pound from side control.
Nieves holds on to Oku's head and controls the position momentarily.
Nieves takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Oku stands up and beckons Nieves to his feet.
Oku throws a series of punches but Nieves moves out of range.
Nieves moves out of range of the body kick.
Nieves swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Oku misses with a jab to the body

and Nieves decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Oku's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Nieves stands up over Oku, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nieves chips away with some ground and pound.
Nieves is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Nieves throws an elbow that misses. Oku uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Nieves's guard. Nice move by Oku!

Nieves wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Oku wants to stand but Nieves is controlling his posture from full guard.
Oku stops Nieves from standing up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Oku lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Nieves wants to stand and escape but Oku is having none of it.
Nieves seems keen to control Oku's posture.

Oku stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Oku closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Nieves quickly recovers to half guard.
Oku wants to stand up but Nieves has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Oku stalling.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sun Oku dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Oku is trying to control. Nieves wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Oku shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Oku showed some decent athleticism there.
Oku is trying to control the action in half guard but Nieves is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Nieves makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Nieves tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Oku defends well and Nieves ends up having to push Oku into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Oku throws a head kick that misses.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Oku shoots in and gets a takedown into Nieves's guard.
Oku is breathing heavily.
Oku wants to stand but Nieves is controlling his posture from full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nieves is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Nieves is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Oku defends well.

Nieves is looking to stand up but Oku isn't so interested in that idea.
Oku with a flurry of punches that miss.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nieves has hold of Oku's hands but Oku slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sun Oku showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Nieves shoots in and drives through. Oku sprawls well.
Oku is looking to clinch but Nieves is avoiding it.
Nieves has a takedown stuffed.

Nieves will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Oku had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Nieves defends it easily.

Nieves throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Oku works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Nieves accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Oku trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Sun Oku seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Oku shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Oku showed some decent athleticism there.
Oku tries to pass to full mount but Nieves defends it.
Oku takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Nieves pushes Oku off looking to stand but Oku dives back in and keeps control.
Nieves is positioning himself well to prevent Oku advancing to mount.
Oku trying to control from half guard but Nieves is working away.
Nieves preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Oku lands a nice short elbow.

Oku stops Nieves from getting back to his feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nieves shoots in looking for a takedown. Oku tries to sprawl out of it but Nieves keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Oku manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Oliver Nieves. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nieves circles away from the clinch attempt.

Oku closes the distance and clinches.
Nieves has a couple of punches blocked by Oku.
A head punch on the inside from Oku fails to land.
Nieves tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Oku jumps into guard, dragging Nieves to the mat.
Nieves is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Nieves has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Nieves is looking to work some ground and pound but Oku has wrist control.
Nieves is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Oku is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


And that's the end of the fight!
Sun Oku comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Oku has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
