PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Thorin Ragnarsson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dennis Kearns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kearns comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Paul Thorn "It's a Great Day to Whup Somebody's Ass" kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Thorin Ragnarsson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Dennis Kearns!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Anni Minnemäki and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ragnarsson instigates a clinch.
Ragnarsson tries for a takedown but Kearns manages to get underhooks.

Kearns manages to break the clinch.
Kearns lands a high kick!
Ragnarsson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Kearns tries to clinch up but Ragnarsson circles away and keeps his distance.
Kearns just misses with a punch to the body.
Ragnarsson half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Kearns is looking to clinch but Ragnarsson is avoiding it.
Ragnarsson went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Kearns scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Kearns throws a nice looking combination but Ragnarsson bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Kearns tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
A quick step to the side and Ragnarsson tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Ragnarsson decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kearns.
Ragnarsson keeps the fight on the outside.
An attempted straight right counter from Ragnarsson misses the target.

Ragnarsson moves into range and clinches up with Kearns.

Kearns ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Kearns no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Kearns is looking to stand up but Ragnarsson isn't so interested in that idea.

Kearns tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Ragnarsson counters with a nice body kick.

Ragnarsson shoots in and gets a takedown into Kearns's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ragnarsson not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Kearns is trying to keep Ragnarsson in close.

Ragnarsson pushes down on Kearns's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Kearns is looking to improve his position.
Ragnarsson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Ragnarsson decides to stand up.
Kearns lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ragnarsson circles away quickly and effectively.

Ragnarsson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Kearns napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Kearns is letting Ragnarsson control him for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Kearns dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Kearns throws a one two combo.
Kearns tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Ragnarsson manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Ragnarsson is looking for a counter combo.
Ragnarsson shoots in looking for a takedown but Kearns manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Ragnarsson's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Ragnarsson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Kearns to the ground. Ragnarsson is now in Kearns's guard.

Ragnarsson gets to his feet. Kearns looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Kearns goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Dennis Kearns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Kearns tries to clinch but Ragnarsson is having none of it.

Ragnarsson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kearns on his heels. He'll look to pass Kearns's guard now, I'm sure.

Ragnarsson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Dennis Kearns is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Kearns throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Ragnarsson feints and as Kearns raises his hands in defense, Ragnarsson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kearns is looking for a triangle here but Ragnarsson uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Kearns really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ragnarsson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ragnarsson looks up at the clock and then as Kearns takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Ragnarsson smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Kearns scores with a one two! Ragnarsson had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.
Ragnarsson throws a wild body kick that Kearns sees coming a mile off.
Kearns thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Ragnarsson if he has to take too many more of those.

Ragnarsson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kearns's guard.

Ragnarsson is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Ragnarsson is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kearns can do to turn this around?

Kearns's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Ragnarsson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kearns for as long as he can get away with.
Kearns is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Dennis Kearns has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ragnarsson takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Ragnarsson, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
