Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Luke Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nelson Gonsales (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Luke Newton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nelson Gonsales!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Matheus Silva and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Gonsales drives through and clinches with Newton against the cage.

Gonsales breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gonsales throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Newton counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Gonsales moves into the clinch.
Newton tries to score a body lock takedown but Gonsales shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Gonsales lands an elbow just above Newton 's eye.


It looks like Luke Newton has been cut.

Gonsales is trying to trip Newton. He has hold of a leg but Newton is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Gonsales persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Gonsales trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Newton looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Newton looking to control.
Gonsales is looking to work some ground and pound but Newton has wrist control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gonsales wants to control from the top but Newton keeps moving.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Newton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Gonsales sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Newton's guard.
Well, if Gonsales is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Newton wants to improve his position but Gonsales is controlling well.
Gonsales tries to pass the half guard into mount. Newton knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Gonsales is working for a submission of some sort.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Newton wants to control but Gonsales is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Gonsales fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Newton, pushing him back against the cage.
Gonsales lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Newton backwards.
Newton's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Newton manages to break the clinch.
Gonsales throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Gonsales closes the distance and clinches.
Newton jumps guard but Gonsales stands there with Newton around his waist. Newton gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Gonsales breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Gonsales feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Gonsales wants to control from the top but Newton keeps moving.
Gonsales in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Gonsales working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Newton lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Gonsales wants to get back to his feet but Newton is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Newton slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gonsales controls Newton momentarily but Newton frees himself.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Newton keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Gonsales.
Newton throws a quick counter head kick but Gonsales was just out of range.
Gonsales has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gonsales drives through and clinches with Newton against the cage.

Gonsales escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Newton wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gonsales has him pressed against the cage.

Gonsales lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Newton or not.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Newton.

Newton looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gonsales is one step ahead there.
Gonsales lands a couple of elbows.

Newton wants to sweep but no luck.
Newton is looking to sweep but instead, Gonsales has passed into half guard.
Gonsales not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Still in half guard, Gonsales seems content to control.
Gonsales is keen to just control but Newton is a slippery customer.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gonsales is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Newton defends it well.
It looks like Gonsales is going to stand back up.

Newton is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Gonsales decides to stand up.
Gonsales throws a head kick that looked like it stung.


Newton is rocked!

Gonsales closes the distance and pushes Newton back into the cage.

Gonsales is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Newton can't fight it off and eventually Gonsales manages to take the fight to the floor. Newton looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Oh Newton is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Gonsales is breathing heavily.
Gonsales forces his way into half guard.
Newton seems to have got his legs back now.
Newton is pressing down on Gonsales's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Gonsales trying to control but Newton is working from the bottom.

Gonsales tries to stand but Newton is controlling from the bottom.

Nelson Gonsales showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Gonsales rushes Newton and presses him up against the cage.
Newton is trying to pull guard but Gonsales turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
A nice left hand lands by Gonsales.

Newton gets to his feet - Gonsales follows without any prompting.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Newton gets tackled into the cage by Gonsales. Gonsales maintains the clinch.
Gonsales lands a right hand.

Gonsales pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Gonsales pounces like a tiger and cracks Newton with a vicious hook! Newton is down but not out! Gonsales follows up with more strikes forcing the ref to jump in and stop it!
