PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sheldon Cherry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Samoa Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sheldon Cherry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Alyssa Summers and John Roberts.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cherry keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Joe has his takedown stuffed

and Cherry counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Joe manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cherry manages to get himself to full guard.

Joe would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Cherry is adopting a defensive guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Joe trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Cherry seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Joe wants to control from the top but Cherry keeps moving.
Joe looking to sit in guard and control but Cherry gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Joe is trying to hold Cherry in close to prevent damage but Cherry has managed to pass into half guard.

Cherry tries to stand but Joe is controlling from the bottom.

Cherry gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Joe has a takedown stuffed.
Cherry is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Joe .
Sheldon Cherry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Samoa Joe .

Excellent takedown into side control there by Cherry.
You can see the frustration on Joe 's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Cherry working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Joe sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Cherry seems to be looking for submissions.

Joe manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Joe tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cherry defends well and Joe ends up having to push Cherry into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Cherry bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Joe sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Joe is trying to get back to full guard.
Cherry lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Joe .
It appears Cherry was looking to counter with a kick there.
Joe shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Cherry sprawls well. Cherry wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Joe gets slowly back to his feet.
Joe tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cherry sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Joe somewhat.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Joe is defended easily by Cherry.
Cherry tries to counter with a takedown but Joe is quick to defend against it.

Cherry shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Cherry was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Cherry wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Joe , who protects the arm well.

Cherry has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Joe is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Cherry scores with a couple of nice shots.

Joe wants to control but Cherry is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Joe is trying to control Cherry's posture but Cherry avoids it.
Cherry in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Cherry is working to tighten his grip on Joe 's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Joe has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Cherry is really squeezing tight and eventually Joe passes out! Cherry breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
