PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Soda Popinski (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Danny Drake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Drake comes into a darkened arena with his song building. ACDC black ice - spoilin for a fight kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Danny Drake has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Soda Popinski's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Soda Popinski!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Danny Drake!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Skip Squint and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Popinski throws a quick inside leg kick.

Drake clinches with his opponent.
Drake lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Drake scores with a hook to the body.

Drake pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Drake lands with a nice body punch.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Popinski misses with a straight left.
Drake dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Popinski is breathing heavily.
Popinski digs a good body shot into Drake's ribs.

Drake closes the distance and clinches.
Popinski has had enough of the clinch but Drake keeps him there for the moment.

Drake breaks the clinch.
Popinski swings for the body but Drake moves out of range.

Drake closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Drake lands in his opponent's guard.
Drake stands up over Popinski, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Popinski has momentary wrist control but Drake slips an elbow through the middle.

Drake wants to control from the top but Popinski keeps moving.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Drake feints and as Popinski raises his hands in defense, Drake changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Drake must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Popinski looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Popinski has momentary wrist control but Drake slips an elbow through the middle.
Drake postures up in Popinski's guard and throws a big left but Popinski blocks it.

Drake throws a strike but Popinski rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Drake working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Popinski doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Popinski manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Drake wants to sweep but no luck.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Popinski scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Popinski throws a quick inside leg kick.

Popinski tries to keep at a distance but Drake has taken the fight into the clinch.

Drake lands a hook that snaps the head of Popinski backwards.

Drake turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Popinski could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Drake wants to control but Popinski is keeping him busy.

Drake with the ground and pound but Popinski regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Popinski is not content to let Drake control the position.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Drake shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Drake was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Popinski wants to try and get back to his feet.

Popinski wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Drake.
Drake fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Drake cracks Popinski with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Popinski tries to hold on but Drake pushes him away.
Drake lands a nice shot to the head.
Drake pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Drake scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Popinski is looking to get to half guard.

Drake looking for a guillotine from mount but Popinski is having none of it.
Drake controlling his opponent.
Drake breaks from Popinski's wrist control and lands an elbow.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Popinski is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Popinski holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Drake tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Danny Drake has got the better of the ground game so far.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Drake cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Drake has hold of Popinski's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Popinski manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Drake throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Popinski because Drake loaded up on that one.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Danny Drake showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Popinski throws an overhand right that lands on Drake's shoulder, as Drake tries to avoid the shot.
Popinski pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Popinski keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Soda Popinski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Drake uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Popinski blocks Drake's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Drake is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Drake tries to hold on but Popinski postures up.
Drake might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Popinski kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Drake can do anything to dispel that myth.
Drake tries to lock up and control but Popinski gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Drake is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Popinski avoids the attempt from Drake to control.
Drake is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Popinski is staying active.
