PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vladmir Chekov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Drazen Zecic (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Drazen Zecic is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vladmir Chekov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Drazen Zecic!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Ivan Kurochkin and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chekov fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Zecic on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Zecic lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.


It looks like Vladmir Chekov has been cut.

Zecic gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Chekov to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Chekov trying to control the position from guard on top but Zecic is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Chekov stands up from Zecic's guard - Chekov perhaps looking for a knockout.

Chekov looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Zecic!

Chekov decides to stand up, so the ref orders Zecic to his feet.
Chekov shoots and misses
and Zecic counters with a two punch combo.
Chekov tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Zecic swivels and escapes.
Zecic looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.

Zecic scores with a nice head shot.
Chekov steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Zecic.
Zecic misses with an uppercut. Chekov saw that one coming.
Zecic throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Zecic keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vladmir Chekov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zecic displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Chekov.
Drazen Zecic is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Chekov bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Chekov keeps control of Zecic as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Zecic blocking some punches.
Chekov tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Chekov pulls guard effortlessly.
Chekov has a closed guard, preventing Zecic from standing up.
Zecic postures up.
Zecic really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Chekov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Chekov is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Zecic defends well.

Chekov has Zecic pulled in close to control his posture.

Chekov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chekov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Chekov trying to control the action but Zecic is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zecic stuns Chekov with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Zecic throws a combination. Chekov tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Chekov moves into the clinch.
The referee is keeping an eye on Chekov - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Chekov drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Chekov goes for a takedown attempt but Zecic pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A slow jab from Zecic misses its intended target.
Chekov looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Zecic moves out of range as Chekov throws a body kick.
Zecic connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Chekov takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Chekov ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Chekov attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Zecic connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Chekov dives in for a single leg takedown but Zecic sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vladmir Chekov. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Zecic lands a head shot.

Oooooh!!! Zecic has knocked Chekov down with a huge combo! Zecic steps away and waves a wobbly Chekov back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


Chekov is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Chekov throws a body shot but no joy.
Oh Chekov is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Zecic cracks Chekov with a good jab.
Vladmir Chekov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Zecic lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Zecic.


Vladmir Chekov's cut is getting worse.
Zecic is breathing heavily.
Zecic takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Chekov shoots in and bounces Zecic off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Chekov really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Chekov passes Zecic's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Chekov seems to have got his legs back now.
Zecic has hold of Chekov's hands but Chekov slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Chekov in particular looking to stall.

Chekov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Zecic keeps working.
Chekov is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Zecic is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Vladmir Chekov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Zecic pushing out the jab but it's not landing.

Chekov closes the distance and pushes Zecic back into the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Chekov lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Chekov stops Zecic from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Chekov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Zecic keeps working.

Chekov is working for a kimura but Zecic is defending it quite comfortably.
Still in half guard, Chekov seems content to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Drazen Zecic showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Chekov shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Zecic defends it nicely.
A telegraphed right hand from Chekov misses the target.

Chekov closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Zecic to the mat! Zecic manages to get full guard.
Chekov wants to control from the top but Zecic keeps moving.

Zecic wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Chekov manages to pass to side control.

Chekov works his way into full mount!
Zecic takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Chekov scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Zecic?
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Zecic can do anything to dispel that myth.
Zecic is squirming around, avoiding Chekov's attempts to control the action.

Chekov lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Chekov cracks Zecic with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Chekov controlling the position easily from mount.
Chekov wants to control the pace but Zecic is squirming around nicely.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Zecic in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Chekov will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Zecic tries to buck Chekov off but Chekov takes his back!

Chekov punishes Zecic with strikes from the back mount.
Chekov controls the action.
Chekov cracks Zecic with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Zecic from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
Chekov is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Zecic can do to turn this around?
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Chekov just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.

And that's the end of the fight!

I think Chekov has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
