PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Virgil Skinner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Jonson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jonson is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Notorious BIG - Hypnotize. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Virgil Skinner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ben Jonson!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Ron Honeybunn and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick by Jonson misses

and Skinner counters with a nice double leg into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Skinner postures up.
Skinner could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Skinner missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Skinner is looking to work some ground and pound but Jonson has wrist control.
Skinner has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Jonson looking to control but Skinner passes into half guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Skinner fails to land a wild elbow strike.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That was a close round but I would say that Virgil Skinner will probably get the nod.

Skinner manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Jonson on his heels. He'll look to pass Jonson's guard now, I'm sure.

Jonson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Skinner can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Jonson dives in for a single leg takedown but Skinner sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Jonson shoots for a double leg takedown but Skinner sprawls well. He's pushed Jonson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Skinner fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Jonson sprawls well initially but Skinner persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Skinner connects with a nice short shot to Jonson's temple.
Jonson is trying to maintain the position but Skinner is very close to passing his half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Jonson tries for a takedown but Skinner sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Virgil Skinner has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ben Jonson.

Skinner shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Skinner showed some decent athleticism there.
Jonson is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Jonson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Skinner but Skinner pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Jonson tries to close the distance and clinch but Skinner swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Skinner will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Jonson is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Jonson darts in looking for a takedown but Skinner gets double underhooks and turns Jonson into the cage.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Skinner, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
