PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Fred Roberts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and William Avery (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Fred Roberts!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, William Avery!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Daniel Franklin and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Avery throws a nice outside leg kick.
Avery takes a swing at Roberts's ribcage but misses.
Roberts tries to counter by clinching up but Avery breaks away and moves out of range.
Avery is looking to land body kicks.
Avery fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Avery fails to land the takedown.
Avery throws a right hand that misses

and Roberts holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Roberts misses with a knee strike.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Both fighters working to control the clinch.

Roberts has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Avery regains guard immediately.
Roberts landing with the ground and pound.
Avery bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Roberts's guard.


That's one minute gone in the round.
Avery prevents Roberts from getting back to his feet.
Avery throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Avery is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Avery wants to control from the top but Roberts keeps moving.
Avery forces his way into half guard.

Avery is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Avery wants to control but Roberts is keeping him busy.
Roberts wants to get back to his feet.

Avery is looking to advance position but Roberts won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Avery trying to control the pace.
Avery stops Roberts from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Avery trying to pass the guard but Roberts defending well.
Roberts is looking to escape.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Roberts staying out of range there.
Roberts takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Avery changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Roberts tries to avoid it but Avery manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Roberts to the ground. Roberts escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Roberts seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Avery lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Roberts takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

William Avery dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Roberts uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Avery.
Roberts is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Avery.
Avery looks to land a right hand but Roberts moved out of range.
Roberts throws a big counter combination but Avery scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Avery misses with a body punch

and Roberts counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Roberts.
Avery throws a head punch that misses.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Roberts.
Avery tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Avery tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Roberts smiles and moves away.
Avery throws a leg kick

and Roberts counters by clinching up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Avery on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Avery is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Roberts to keep the fight standing.
Roberts scores with a hook to the body.

Roberts escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A swing and a miss from Avery.
Roberts attempts a counter takedown but Avery avoids it well and moves away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Avery smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Avery missing with a left hand there. Roberts was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Avery misses with a leg kick

and Roberts moves into the clinch.

Roberts has picked Avery up - he's going for a ride! Roberts dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Avery avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Roberts.
Avery is trying to control but can't.
Avery is trying to get back to full guard.
Roberts slips a nice elbow through Avery's hands, connecting with Avery's forehead.

Avery tries to roll over but Roberts keeps him under control.
Roberts throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Avery moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Roberts accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Roberts has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Roberts postures up in Avery's guard and throws a big left but Avery blocks it.
Avery throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Fred Roberts overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Avery looking for a triangle here. Roberts is fighting it but it looks tight! Avery pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Roberts is tapping out - this one is all over!
