PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Wilber Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexander Wilson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Wilber Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Alexander Wilson!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Phil Schofield and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grant avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Wilson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Grant tries to avoid it but Wilson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Grant to the ground. Grant escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Grant slaps away a takedown attempt from Wilson, before circling back to the center of the mat.
A little feinted left hand from Grant on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Wilson has a takedown stuffed.
Wilber Grant has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alexander Wilson.
Wilson throws a combination that misses
letting Grant counter with a right hand.

Wilson moves into the clinch successfully.

Grant is fighting off a takedown attempt but Wilson is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Grant to the mat. Grant regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Grant knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wilson on the ground.

Grant's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Wilson is pressing down on Grant's thigh, looking to free his foot. Grant is holding on for now.
Grant is staying active underneath Wilson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Wilson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Grant is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Wilson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Wilson's back!
Wilson rolls, trying to escape but Grant keeps control of the position.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Wilson holds on and takes a little breather.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Wilber Grant will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Wilson shoots for a double leg takedown but Grant sprawls well. He's pushed Wilson's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Wilson throws a sloppy head kick and Grant moves out of range easily.

Wilber Grant overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Grant has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Grant's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Grant postures up in Wilson's guard and throws a big left but Wilson blocks it.

Grant gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Grant takes a kick to the side of the head.

Wilson closes the distance and pushes Grant back into the cage.
Grant fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Wilson lands a hook to the side of the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Still in the clinch, Grant scores with a nice short uppercut.

Grant breaks from the clinch.
Grant is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Wilson can do to turn this around?
Grant slaps away a takedown attempt from Wilson, before circling back to the center of the mat.

and Grant counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Wilson has his foot on Grant's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grant works his way back into a safe position though.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Wilson tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Grant manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Grant's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Grant with a nice head shot there.
Wilson is trying to keep Grant in close.
Wilson will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Wilson controls Grant momentarily but Grant frees himself.

Wilson is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Grant has his hands clasped together but Wilson extends and breaks Grant's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Wilson.
