PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Django Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eli Armis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brown comes to the cage accompanied by System Of A Down - Chic 'N' Stu. The crowd seem to be enjoying Armis's choice of entrance music: Mortal Kombat Theme. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Django Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 11 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Eli Armis!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Elvis Blanc and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Armis closes the distance and clinches up with Brown, looking for a takedown. Armis pushes Brown against the cage but Brown circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Brown scores with a head kick. Armis tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time.
Armis shoots for a double leg takedown but Brown sprawls well. He's pushed Armis's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Django Brown seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Brown waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Armis.
Armis tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Brown defends well and Armis ends up having to push Brown into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Django Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eli Armis.
Nice takedown defense from Brown. No joy for Armis on that attempt.
Brown thuds a left hand into Armis's body.
Brown ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Armis moves away.
Nice jab there from Brown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brown lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.

and Armis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Brown's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Armis postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Armis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brown swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Armis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Brown is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Brown has Armis pulled in close to control his posture.
Armis is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Brown gets caught napping as Armis dives in and scores a takedown. Brown manages to retain guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Armis working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.

Brown wanted to stand there but Armis had control of the position.

Brown avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Brown has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Armis is proving hard to escape from.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Brown throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

Armis feints and as Brown raises his hands in defense, Armis changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Django Brown will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Brown slaps away a takedown attempt from Armis, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Brown throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Armis on the side of the head.
Armis steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Brown.
Armis tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Armis tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Brown swivels and escapes.
Brown misses with a right hand

and Armis counters with a nice double leg into side control. Brown won't be happy with that.
Armis wants to lay and pray for a moment but Brown keeps working.

Armis thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Brown is trying to control Armis's posture but Armis avoids it.
What's Brown going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.
Armis in side control, just content to control the action for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Armis looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Brown gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brown has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Armis is working away from the top position though.

Armis is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Brown has managed to free his arm - good work.
Armis prevents Brown from improving his position.

Armis passes the guard and advances to mount!
Brown keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Brown is staying active underneath Armis, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Brown holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

Brown is trying to control but can't.
Brown is trying is best to control the position here.
Brown has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Armis is working away from the top position though.
Brown is trying to control but Armis passes into side control!

Armis is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Brown has escaped the position, nice work there.

Armis is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Brown is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Armis is looking to take a break and control but Brown is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Eli Armis showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Armis shoots in but no luck this time.
Brown misses with a left hand

and Armis decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Brown's guard.
Armis looking to sit in guard and control but Brown gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Brown wants to get up but he can't break Armis's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Armis tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Brown tries to stand but Armis is controlling from the bottom.

Armis looking to control but instead Brown has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

Brown has his hands clasped together around Armis's back. He's all about the action.
Eli Armis has got the better of the ground game so far.
Brown tries to get to full guard but Armis has control of the leg.
Armis takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Brown is doing well to control the position and prevent Armis from advancing to side control.
Brown tries to roll over but Armis keeps him under control.
Brown has hold of Armis's hands but Armis slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Armis is looking to take a break and control but Brown is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Brown is looking to control Armis's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Brown avoid being mounted?

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Brown is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Armis fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Armis is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Brown is looking to slow Armis down with leg kicks.
Armis throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Armis darts in looking for a takedown but Brown gets double underhooks and turns Armis into the cage.
Django Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eli Armis.
