PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chikau Sakama (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Greg Growler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Greg Growler told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Chikau Sakama!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Greg Growler!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Donald Grub and William Gold.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Growler looks to land a body kick but Sakama moved away.
Sakama throws a lazy right hand but Growler sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Sakama stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Growler.
Nice body kick from Growler.
Sakama swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Growler fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Sakama has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Growler dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Sakama. That did some damage!
A solid leg kick lands there for Growler.
That kick from Growler tenderised Sakama's leg. Sakama is trying to keep his angry face on.
Nice defenses there by Growler.
Greg Growler seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Growler looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.

Growler gets caught napping as Sakama dives in and scores a takedown. Growler manages to retain guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Sakama bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Growler's guard.

Sakama looking to sit in guard and control but Growler gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Growler wants to stand but Sakama is controlling his posture from full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Growler engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Sakama is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Growler content to stall in guard here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Sakama looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Growler wants to control from the top but Sakama keeps moving.
Sakama is trying to keep Growler in close.
Growler seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Growler throws an elbow that misses. Sakama uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Growler's guard. Nice move by Sakama!

Growler wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Sakama wants to control from the top but Growler keeps moving.
Growler is adopting a defensive guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Growler is on top in guard.

Growler passes Sakama's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Growler throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Greg Growler dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Growler uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Sakama.
Sakama looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

It looks like Chikau Sakama has been cut.
That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Sakama crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Growler - the referee stops the clock and Sakama gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Growler. Sakama manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes.
Growler connects with a solid leg kick.
Sakama shoots in and drives through. Growler sprawls well.
Growler throws a head kick but Sakama moves out of range.
A nice leg kick lands there from Growler.
Growler chopping away at his opponent's legs.

Sakama closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Growler did well to prevent Sakama getting side control.

Growler manages to get to full guard.
Sakama trying to control the position from guard on top but Growler is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sakama is pushing down on Growler's leg trying to pass to half guard. Growler is fighting to maintain full guard but Sakama has managed to sneak the leg through.
Growler keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Growler is trying to get back to full guard.
Growler is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sakama's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sakama's back!
Sakama manages to reverse the position and now he's in Growler's guard. Nice work there by Sakama.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Growler. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Growler pulls Sakama in to control the position.
Growler has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sakama tries to free his leg and advance position but Growler is retaining full guard.
Sakama wants to control from the top but Growler keeps moving.

Sakama wants to lay and pray for a moment but Growler keeps working.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sakama moves nicely into side control.
Growler tries to improve position but can't.

Sakama tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Sakama has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Growler isn't going anywhere.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Growler explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Greg Growler will probably get the nod - 10:9.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Sakama dives in for a single leg takedown but Growler sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Sakama throws an overhand right that lands on Growler's shoulder, as Growler tries to avoid the shot.
Growler throws a fast counter high kick but Sakama manages to duck under it in time.

Growler moves into range and lands a nice body kick.

Growler lands a nice looking kick to the body. Sakama takes a step back to recover.
Sakama on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
This has been an exciting period of action!
A nice inside leg kick there by Growler. That's going to slow Sakama down.
Growler lands with a straight right. Sakama didn't see that one coming.


Chikau Sakama's cut is getting worse.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Growler fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Sakama has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Sakama wants to stay close but Growler steps back to make room for something. Sakama seems frozen to the spot and bam! huge swing of the leg from Growler and Sakama drops like he has been shot! A huge head kick and it's all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:58 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Greg Growler!
