PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donnell Jenkins (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Lassiter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Donnell Jenkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Lassiter!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jenkins takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Jenkins throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Lassiter's waist but Lassiter gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jenkins off to one side.

Lassiter gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Jenkins is trying to pull guard but Lassiter has him pressed against the cage.
Jenkins really is a fat lump.
Jenkins is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Lassiter to keep the fight standing.

Jenkins is fighting to break Lassiter's control of his arms but Lassiter is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jenkins accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Lassiter stuffs the takedown.

Jenkins tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Lassiter just stands there and leans against the cage.

Lassiter jumps into guard, dragging Jenkins to the mat.
Jenkins wants to control from the top but Lassiter keeps moving.
Lassiter is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Lassiter looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Jenkins wants to get up but he can't break Lassiter's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Jenkins wanted to stand there but Lassiter had control of the position.
Lassiter bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Jenkins's guard.

Lassiter drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lassiter jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Lassiter stands and steps away. Jenkins gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Paul Lassiter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Lassiter closes the distance and clinches.

Lassiter lands a takedown into guard.
Jenkins preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Lassiter gets to his feet - Jenkins follows without any prompting.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Jenkins, right into the meat.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Jenkins tries to pull guard but Lassiter holds him up against the cage and eventually Jenkins drops back down to his feet.

Lassiter breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jenkins will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Lassiter throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Jenkins tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Lassiter is in Jenkins's guard.
Lassiter throws a big elbow that misses.
Lassiter trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lassiter postures up and lands a big shot to Jenkins's brow.
Lassiter has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Jenkins is proving hard to escape from.
Jenkins being controlled here, momentarily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Lassiter dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


An inside leg kick lands from Lassiter.

Lassiter shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Lassiter tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Jenkins won't allow Lassiter to pass to mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lassiter is taking a breather. Jenkins says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Lassiter looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Jenkins with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Jenkins is trying to stand back up but Lassiter is controlling him
Lassiter has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Lassiter seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jenkins is trying to maintain the position but Lassiter is very close to passing his half guard.
Lassiter performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Jenkins wants to control but Lassiter is keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lassiter looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Jenkins looks like he's trying to stand up.
Lassiter wants to free his trapped foot but Jenkins is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Lassiter controlling the action here.
Lassiter is looking to advance position but Jenkins won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lassiter is nestled in close to Jenkins, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Paul Lassiter has got the better of the ground game so far.
Lassiter working over Jenkins with some ground and pound. Jenkins looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Lassiter takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Lassiter's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Lassiter stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Jenkins takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.


It looks like Donnell Jenkins has been cut.

Lassiter lands with a shot to the body.

Lassiter shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Jenkins trying to control here.
Lassiter frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Lassiter sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Paul Lassiter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Jenkins chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Lassiter can pounce on him.
Lassiter lands a brutal head kick. Jenkins looks out on his feet and Lassiter throws more strikes until the ref is forced to stop the fight!
