Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Luis Cruz!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, David Schapiro and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
West Jr just misses with a punch to the body.
Cruz drops down looking to force a counter takedown but West Jr defends it well.
West Jr ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
West Jr getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Cruz keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Cruz tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Cruz takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
George West Jr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
West Jr just misses with a punch to the body.
Cruz changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
West Jr lands with a good body shot.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

West Jr throws a jab but it's blocked by Cruz.
And Cruz tries to counter it with a takedown but West Jr pushes his down on his head and steps out.

West Jr's corner calls for a 1-2. West Jr obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
West Jr swings for the body but Cruz moves out of range.

Cruz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

and Cruz counters with a nice double leg into side control. West Jr won't be happy with that.
West Jr is looking to regain half guard here but Cruz keeps moving and retains side control.
West Jr knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cruz on the ground.
Cruz sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but West Jr is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Cruz misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cruz thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
West Jr parries the strikes from Cruz easily there. Cruz is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable West Jr to escape.

Cruz has hold of West Jr's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! West Jr tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Cruz cranks the arm and West Jr screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from West Jr, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:24 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Luis Cruz!
During a confident post fight interview, Luis Cruz thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
