PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between German Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Karen Pashikyan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pashikyan has chosen Yerbolat Kudaibergenov-JENIS as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, German Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Karen Pashikyan!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Illya Tyunina and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pashikyan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Hughes, pushing him back against the cage.
Hughes is working for takedown but Pashikyan is calmly controlling the position for now.

Pashikyan jumps guard.
Hughes controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Pashikyan looking for a sweep. Not yet Pashikyan, not yet.
Pashikyan controls Hughes momentarily but Hughes frees himself.
Hughes looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Pashikyan gets caught flat footed, as Hughes shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Pashikyan is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Hughes presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Pashikyan manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Pashikyan is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Hughes throws a wild body kick that Pashikyan sees coming a mile off.
Pashikyan drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Hughes defends it well.
A combination from Pashikyan does no damage.
As Pashikyan tries to get set, Hughes tries to push him back and clinch up but Pashikyan manages to avoid the attempt.
Hughes could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Pashikyan drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Pashikyan wants to control but Hughes is keeping him busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Hughes is trying to get back to half guard.
Hughes sneaks back into half guard.
Hughes lands a couple of sideways elbows.

Pashikyan wants to stand up but Hughes is controlling the position.

Hughes is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Pashikyan pulls his head out easily.
Hughes tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Pashikyan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Hughes does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Pashikyan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hughes is just riding it out for now. Pashikyan eventually gives up the hold.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Hughes throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
As Hughes backs off Pashikyan throws a huge counter combo but Hughes manages to avoid it all.

Pashikyan clinches.
Hughes tries to break the clinch but Pashikyan is controlling the position.

Hughes has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Pashikyan is trying to keep an underhook but Hughes manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Hughes is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Hughes content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Pashikyan wants to control but Hughes is keeping busy.

Pashikyan manages to escape and get back to his feet!
Pashikyan connects with a solid leg kick.

Pashikyan moves into range and clinches up with Hughes.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Pashikyan tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Pashikyan is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Hughes dives into side control.
Hughes wants to control but Pashikyan is keeping him busy.

Hughes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Pashikyan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Hughes thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Pashikyan seems a little lost for a moment, as Hughes dominates the positioning.
Pashikyan manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Pashikyan has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hughes is working away from the top position though.
Pashikyan is breathing heavily.
Pashikyan wants to improve his position but Hughes is controlling well.

Still in half guard, Hughes seems content to control.
Hughes has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Pashikyan slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Pashikyan wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Pashikyan darts in and clinches Hughes up against the cage.

Hughes escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pashikyan gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Hughes working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Pashikyan doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pashikyan manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Karen Pashikyan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Hughes lands a left hand that snaps the head of Pashikyan backwards.
Hughes wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Pashikyan has him pressed against the cage.

Hughes tightens his grip and picks Pashikyan up, before dumping him to the ground. Pashikyan manages to land in guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Pashikyan might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hughes haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Pashikyan looks for the body kick but Hughes saw that one coming.
Pashikyan takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Pashikyan.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Pashikyan. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Hughes wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
Pashikyan postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Hughes is looking to regain half guard here but Pashikyan keeps moving and retains side control.

Hughes throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Hughes is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Karen Pashikyan is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Hughes takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Pashikyan is trying to break the clinch but Hughes is controlling him.

Well Pashikyan has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
