PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Benjamin Mullen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Damon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Damon manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mullen on his heels. He'll look to pass Mullen's guard now, I'm sure.
Damon wanted to stand there but Mullen had control of the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mullen trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Mullen throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Damon has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mullen is proving hard to escape from.
Mullen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Damon on the ground.
Mullen throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Damon wants to control from the top but Mullen keeps moving.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mullen throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Damon tries to sprawl but Mullen drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Mullen prevents Damon from improving his position.
Damon is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Mullen is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Damon doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mullen.

Mullen decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Damon takes the fight into the clinch.
Still in the clinch, Damon scores with a nice short uppercut.
Mullen jumps guard but Damon turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Mullen really is a fat lump.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Damon wants to break free but Mullen has control.
Damon lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Mullen backwards.
Mullen is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Damon to keep the fight standing.
Damon just leaning against Mullen, taking a breather.
Mullen tries to pull guard but Damon forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Benjamin Mullen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Damon tries to stall but Mullen uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Mullen really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...
Mullen drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mullen tries to land a knee to the head but Damon blocks with his arms.

Damon slows down the pace here.

Damon gets control of Mullen's arms and successfully pulls guard. Damon will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Damon wants to sweep here but Mullen controlling him for the moment.
Mullen throws a big elbow that misses.
Mullen trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mullen is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Damon controls Mullen momentarily but Mullen frees himself.
Mullen throws a big right hand that misses.

Mullen stands up and waves to Damon to follow him.
Damon digs a good body shot into Mullen's ribs.

Damon feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Mullen is looking for a triangle here but Damon uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Mullen is breathing heavily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mullen tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Damon dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Nice body kick from Damon.

Damon moves into the clinch successfully.
Mullen avoiding damage as Damon throws knees to the body.
Mullen is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Damon to keep the fight standing.
Mullen misses with a hook to the ribs.
Damon has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Damon has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Mullen doesn't defend quickly enough and Damon has managed to lock this one up! Can Mullen escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Damon on a fantastic submission victory.
