PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Denis Henry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and William Dettman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). William Dettman told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Denis Henry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, William Dettman!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Tiny Johnson and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Henry. Those never looked like landing.

Henry gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Dettman has Henry pressed against the cage, preventing Henry from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Henry escapes and gets back to his feet.

Dettman throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Henry sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Dettman's coach down at Beast Playground was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Dettman's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
Henry throws a series of punches but Dettman avoids them all with ease.
Henry avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Dettman misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Henry fails in his attempt to clinch.
Henry wants to clinch up but Dettman keeps it at a distance.
Henry lands a two punch combo.

Dettman shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Dettman was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Henry is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now.
Henry sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Henry is looking for a sweep. Dettman is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Henry preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dettman is trying to control. Henry wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Dettman throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Dettman in particular looking to stall.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Henry tries to get to full guard but Dettman has control of the leg.

That was a close round but I would say that Denis Henry will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Dettman has a closed guard, preventing Henry from standing up.
Dettman wants to improve his position but instead Henry has moved into half guard.

Henry is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Dettman doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Henry.
Henry wants to stand up but Dettman is controlling the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Dettman tries to clinch up but Henry circles away and keeps his distance.
Henry tries to counter by clinching up but Dettman breaks away and moves out of range.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
A telegraphed right hand from Dettman misses the target.
Henry throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Dettman throws a counter combo.

Henry tries to sprawl but Dettman drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Henry is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Dettman pulls his head out easily.
Henry is trying to control but can't.
Henry is staying active underneath Dettman, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

William Dettman showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Henry misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Dettman shoots in and bounces Henry off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Dettman accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Dettman drops back looking for a leg! Henry is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Henry manages to kick Dettman off! Dettman jumps back into Henry's guard.

Henry thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Henry with a couple of shots from the bottom there - nothing Dettman can't handle though.
Henry is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Henry tries to bum rush Dettman with a series of wild strikes but Dettman uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Henry gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Dettman to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Henry is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Dettman is aware though and is defending well.

Dettman throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Dettman closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Dettman takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Dettman moves nicely into side control.
Dettman should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Henry is trying to get back to half guard.
Henry defending against the ground and pound.
Henry is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Dettman off and has taken his back!
Henry gets his hands free as Dettman looks to control.

Henry has the hooks in. Dettman is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Henry trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Dettman doesn't escape.
Dettman is really stuck here.
Henry doesn't have the hooks in and Dettman manages to turn into his guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

William Dettman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Dettman has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
