PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Franklyn Burris (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bubba Red (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Red has chosen Black Stone Cherry Bulldozer as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Franklyn Burris!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bubba Red!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Edson Gomes and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Red throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Burris's waist but Burris gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Red off to one side.
Red fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Red shoots in looking for a takedown. Burris tries to sprawl out of it but Red keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Burris manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Franklyn Burris has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bubba Red.
Red tries for a takedown but Burris circles away easily

and Burris counters by moving into the clinch.
Burris stops a takedown attempt from Red.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Red is trying to break the clinch but Burris has him pressed against the cage.

Red tightens his grip and picks Burris up, before dumping him to the ground. Burris manages to land in guard.

Burris looking for a guillotine here but Red defends easily.
Burris could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Burris is looking for a triangle but Red pushes his legs off easily.

Burris is looking for a triangle here but Red uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Burris manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Red really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Burris. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Burris throwing shots but Red is blocking nicely.
Red wants to get back to full guard.
Red looks like he's trying to stand up.
Burris thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Red's head.

Burris wants to get back to his feet.
Burris trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Red is trying is best to control the position here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Burris missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Burris prevents Red from improving his position.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Red can do anything to dispel that myth.
Burris thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Red is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Nice strikes from Burris there.

Burris wants to work for an arm triangle but Red is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Red preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Red circles away from the clinch attempt.
Red shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Red throws a right hand that Burris ducks under and follows up with a left that Burris also avoids with ease.

Red shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Red showed some decent athleticism there.

Red is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Burris has managed to free his arm - good work.
Red looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Burris actively working from the bottom here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Red looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Burris slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Franklyn Burris will probably get the nod.
That's time! Burris's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Burris closes the distance but Red moves to the side
and Red counters with a series of strikes. Burris will be more careful next time no doubt.
Both fighters circling a little - Red finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Burris avoids a punch combination nicely.
Burris stuffs the takedown.
Burris tries to counter with a takedown but Red is quick to defend against it.
Franklyn Burris is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Red clinches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burris jumps guard but Red stands there with Burris around his waist. Burris gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Red is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Burris is defending well.
Burris gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Red.
Franklyn Burris has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bubba Red.

Burris jumps guard.

Burris is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Red is aware though and is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Burris has his foot on Red's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Red works his way back into a safe position though.

Red connects with a couple of short punches.

Red gets to his feet - Burris follows without any prompting.
Red fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Burris avoids it really well and circles away.

Red throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Burris was covering up waiting for the punch and Red finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Burris is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Red defends well.

Red has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Burris looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Red has picked Burris up and slammed him! Burris can't keep hold of the triangle and Red manages to pass to side control!
Burris seems a little lost for a moment, as Red dominates the positioning.

Red wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Burris, who protects the arm well.
Burris is trying to control Red's posture but Red avoids it.
Red cracks Burris with a big right hand but Burris just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Red thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Red looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Burris manages to get back to half guard.
Burris wants to get back to full guard but Red has passed into side control.
Burris prevents Red from improving position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Burris sneaks back into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bubba Red showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Red throws a body shot but no joy.

Burris tries to keep at a distance but Red has taken the fight into the clinch.
Burris gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Burris misses with a punch to the body.

Red has hold of one of Burris's legs. Burris is fighting the takedown attempt but Red gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Burris being controlled here, momentarily.
Red is continuing to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Burris escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Red gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Bubba Red has got the better of the ground game so far.

Burris utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Burris might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Red not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Red is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Burris is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Burris has escaped and now he's on top!

Burris keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Red's head.
Burris throws a big elbow that misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Red is pulling down on Burris's head to control his posture.
Burris with a flurry of punches that miss.
Burris throwing strikes but missing.

Red pushes Burris off and scrambles back to his feet.
Red leaves Burris with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Burris takes one on the chin but keeps coming.


It looks like Franklyn Burris has been cut.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Burris fails with an attempt to clinch.
Red keeps the fight on the outside.
Bubba Red seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Burris gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Red to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Burris looking for a guillotine here but Red defends easily.
Burris being controlled here, momentarily.

Red stands up and waves to Burris to follow him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Red looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Burris!
Burris is trying to buck Red off.
Red tries to move into full mount but can't pass Burris's legs.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Burris is looking for a sweep.

Red is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Burris has escaped the position, nice work there.
Red remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bubba Red comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Red has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
