And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 28 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Leo Vieira!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Chris Saunders and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Backlund fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Vieira is out of range.
Backlund throws a head kick that misses.
Vieira defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Backlund.
Backlund throws a sloppy head kick and Vieira moves out of range easily.
Backlund misses with a leg kick

and Vieira counters with a shoot takedown. Backlund fights it but they end up in guard.
Backlund lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Vieira utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Backlund moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Vieira has worked his arm free - good work by Vieira!

Backlund shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Vieira's guard.
Backlund is looking to pass into half guard but Vieira pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Vieira is in guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Vieira accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Vieira drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Backlund manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Vieira has Backlund in his guard.

We've been hearing good reports from Backlund's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Vieira really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Backlund. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
