PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Romano Schoots (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Renato Cardoso (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cardoso is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Samba de Janeiro. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 27 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Romano Schoots!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Renato Cardoso!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Steve Smith and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schoots feints and then cracks Cardoso's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Cardoso down.
Schoots jabs at Cardoso's body.
A chopping leg kick lands by Cardoso.
Cardoso has a takedown stuffed.
And Schoots counters with a quick kick to the body but Cardoso blocks it.
Schoots on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Cardoso enables Schoots to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Cardoso manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Schoots is in close to Cardoso's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Schoots controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Cardoso throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Schoots escapes and throws Cardoso's legs to the side, diving into side control!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cardoso is being controlled here.
Cardoso tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Cardoso takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.

Schoots is looking to take a break and control but Cardoso is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Cardoso manages to work his way to half guard, despite Schoots's best efforts.
Schoots prevents Cardoso from improving his position.
Schoots working over Cardoso with some ground and pound. Cardoso looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Schoots landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Cardoso is looking for a sweep. Schoots is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

With the fighters up against the cage, Cardoso throws an elbow but misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Cardoso tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Cardoso doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Schoots pushes Cardoso back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Cardoso lands a left hand that snaps the head of Schoots backwards.

Schoots throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Cardoso on the side of the head.
Romano Schoots is winning the standup battle so far.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Schoots wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.

Schoots fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Cardoso ducks right into an uppercut from Schoots.
Cardoso tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Schoots defends well and Cardoso ends up having to push Schoots into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Schoots changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Cardoso looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

We've been hearing good reports from Schoots's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Schoots, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
