PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hans Maldonado (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pepo Vinkela (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Pepo Vinkela was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Hans Maldonado!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pepo Vinkela!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Dillan Fox and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Maldonado enables Vinkela to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Maldonado manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Vinkela is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Vinkela looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Maldonado wants to stand up but Vinkela is controlling him.

Vinkela drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Maldonado manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Vinkela has Maldonado in his guard.

Vinkela is pulling down on Maldonado's head to control his posture.

That's one minute gone in the round.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vinkela bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maldonado's guard.

Vinkela slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vinkela is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Maldonado is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Maldonado has escaped and now he's on top!

Vinkela tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vinkela is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Vinkela is trying to work for a kimura but Maldonado is defending well.

Vinkela is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Maldonado is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Vinkela scores with a couple of nice shots.
Vinkela is keen to just control but Maldonado is a slippery customer.
Vinkela lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Vinkela is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Vinkela stops Maldonado from getting back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Vinkela not doing much here.
Maldonado moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Vinkela pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Maldonado is keeping the position for now.
Maldonado knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Vinkela on the ground.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Maldonado can't keep his opponent in guard - Vinkela advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Vinkela is working for a submission of some sort.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pepo Vinkela dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Vinkela has gone for a leg lock! Maldonado slips out almost immediately though and dives into Vinkela's guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Vinkela holds on and takes a little breather.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Maldonado will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Vinkela shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Vinkela is figuring out what he wants to do next.

Vinkela is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Maldonado sees it coming and defends easily.

Vinkela is working for a kimura here but Maldonado manages to reverse the position and he's now in Vinkela's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Vinkela bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maldonado's guard.

Vinkela wants to control from the top but Maldonado keeps moving.

Vinkela wants to control but Maldonado is keeping him busy.

Pepo Vinkela showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Maldonado's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Maldonado tries for a takedown but Vinkela sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Vinkela changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Vinkela drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Vinkela has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Maldonado is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Vinkela yanks on the arm and Maldonado is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Vinkela.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:34 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Pepo Vinkela!
In his post fight interview, Pepo Vinkela gave a big smile as he said 'Vinkelo ne proshtava!'.
