PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Hakuin Ekaku (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Masakazu Aoki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Aoki is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Aerosmith - Dream On. The key to victory for Hakuin Ekaku has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Hakuin Ekaku!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Masakazu Aoki!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Stewart Dunkirk and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big right from Ekaku misses.
Ekaku throws a head kick that misses.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Aoki.
Ekaku throws a right hand that Aoki ducks under and follows up with a left that Aoki also avoids with ease.

Aoki gets a takedown into half guard.
Ekaku trying to hold on to Aoki's head to control him but Aoki postures up.
Aoki is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Ekaku is looking to escape.

Still in half guard, Aoki seems content to control.
Aoki is looking to take a break and control but Ekaku is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Aoki tries to clinch up but Ekaku circles away and keeps his distance.

A slapping leg kick lands for Ekaku.
Ekaku throws a nice looking combination but Aoki bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Aoki takes one on the chin but seems OK.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Aoki uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Ekaku.

Aoki looks for a takedown but Ekaku sprawls well.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Ekaku lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Aoki circles away quickly and effectively.
Ekaku keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Ekaku gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Aoki stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ekaku swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Aoki throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Ekaku works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ekaku wants to stand and escape but Aoki is having none of it.
Aoki is looking to advance position but Ekaku has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Masakazu Aoki showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Aoki shoots for a takedown but Ekaku saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
The fight stays on the outside here - Aoki looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.

Aoki goes for a risky armbar from back mount and it's not paid off. Ekaku escapes and is now in half guard on top.

Horrible takedown by Aoki or perhaps it was just good defense by Ekaku which made him look bad.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Ekaku is trying to stick to Aoki's back but Aoki is turning into Ekaku. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Ekaku's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Aoki.

Aoki slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Aoki gets control of Ekaku's arms and successfully pulls guard. Aoki will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Aoki manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ekaku manages to get himself to full guard.
Aoki throws and elbow that misses. Ekaku uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Aoki's guard. Nice move by Ekaku!

and Ekaku counters with a big head kick but Aoki shrugs it off.

Ekaku will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Hakuin Ekaku.
I think Ekaku has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
