PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Leigh Ellison (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 1, fighting out of New York, Leigh Ellison!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Jonathan Paton and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Jones has managed to clinch.
Ellison could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Jones pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Nice combo by Jones! Oh, that's hurt him - Ellison falls to the canvas and Jones follows him into side control.


It looks like Leigh Ellison has been cut.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Jones working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Ellison might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The referee asks Jones politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Jones prefers to stall for the moment though.
Jones sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Ellison is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ellison. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Jones is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ellison knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Jones wants to control for a moment but Ellison uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Jones tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones looks to land a strike but Ellison avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Ellison will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Jones postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Jones must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Ellison working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Jones.
Jones won't allow Ellison to sweep him here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Jones gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Ellison has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Jones after a bit of a struggle.

Ellison blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Ellison blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jones tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Ellison is trying to drag Jones to the mat but Jones just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
A nice left hand lands by Jones.
Ellison drops down looking for an ankle pick but Jones pulls his leg out and moves away.

Jones instigates a clinch.

Jones breaks from the clinch.
Ellison tries to score a power double leg takedown but Jones sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ellison somewhat.

Jones wants to break the clinch but can't.

Jones stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Ellison managing to block the knees to the body from Jones.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Ellison keeps control of Jones as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Ellison wants a takedown.
Ellison has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Jones after a bit of a struggle.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jon Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ellison loads up on a big right hand but Jones slips the punch.
Jones looks to land a combination. Ellison sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Jones has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
A head kick misses from Jones.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Jones trying to control the position but instead, Ellison has worked for underhooks and has pushed Jones into the cage.
Ellison keeps control of Jones as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Ellison drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Ellison prevents Jones from breaking the clinch.
Jones wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Ellison blocks a body shot from Jones.
Jones putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Ellison in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.

Jones breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

and Jones counters with a combination of strikes to the head and body that crumple Ellison!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jones is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ellison accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Jones throws his legs up looking for a submission but Ellison uses it to pass to side control.

Ellison is trying to get an arm triangle but Jones is defending well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Ellison is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Jones has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Ellison shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Ellison finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Ellison is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Jones defends it well.

Ellison is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Jones is just riding it out for now. Ellison eventually gives up the hold.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Jones is looking to escape.
Jones is trying to escape back to his feet but Ellison uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Ellison decides to take the fight back to the feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
A punch combination from Jones misses.
Jones takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Jones closes the distance and clinches.
Ellison drops down looking for an ankle pick but Jones pulls his leg out and moves away.

Ellison drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Jones is wriggling around but Ellison manages to pass to half guard.

Jones is defending against the submission attempts here by Ellison.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones pushes Ellison off but Ellison dives into side control.

Ellison looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Ellison tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ellison has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Ellison stands up and beckons Jones to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Jones throws a low kick but Ellison moves out of range easily.

Jones closes the distance and pushes Ellison back into the cage.

Ellison tightens his grip and picks Jones up, before dumping him to the ground. Jones manages to land in guard.
Ellison chips away with some ground and pound.
Leigh Ellison overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Ellison scoring with punches to the head and body.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ellison postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Leigh Ellison has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Jones had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Ellison defends it easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Leigh Ellison showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
