The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Thompson pinned against the cage. Thompson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Thompson lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Thompson stuffs the takedown.
James looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Thompson is fending him off so far but James persists. Nope, Thompson circles away and we're back to standing.
Thompson looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger.
Hunter Thompson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alex James.
James shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Thompson but Thompson pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Thompson leaves James with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Thompson throws a hook to the side of James's head but James sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
James will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

James is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Thompson's half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

We've been told by Thompson's head coaches at Team Beta Male that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

James takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

James changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Thompson tries to avoid it but James manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Thompson to the ground. Thompson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

James might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Oooooh!!! Thompson has knocked James down with a huge combo! Thompson steps away and waves a wobbly James back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!

It looks like Alex James has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

A very excited looking Hunter Thompson rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
