PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rauno Repomies (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez comes to the cage accompanied by Kryptonite. Repomies has chosen Andy Suonsilmä - Karrelle palanut enkeli as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cain Velasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rauno Repomies!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Jeff Smith and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Velasquez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Repomies's waist but Repomies gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Velasquez off to one side.
Repomies throws an overhand right that lands on Velasquez's shoulder, as Velasquez tries to avoid the shot.
Velasquez showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Repomies.
Velasquez throws a predictable looking body shot
and Repomies counters with a three punch combo that has Velasquez backing up. Velasquez nods at Repomies to acknowledge the strikes.
Repomies avoids a punch combination nicely.

Repomies only half commits to the counter leg kick.

Velasquez gets a double leg takedown into Repomies's guard.
Velasquez wants to control from the top but Repomies keeps moving.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Velasquez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Velasquez dives in and grabs Repomies's left leg, looking for a takedown. Repomies pushes down on Velasquez's head and hops out.

Repomies will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Repomies throws a body punch but Velasquez moves out of range.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Velasquez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

It looks like Cain Velasquez has been cut.

Velasquez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Repomies moves away.
Repomies connects with a nice looking jab.

Velasquez gets a takedown into half guard.
Repomies is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Repomies is concentrating on defense, preventing Velasquez from advancing position.
Repomies is trying to maintain the position but Velasquez is very close to passing his half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Velasquez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Repomies has managed to free his arm - good work.

Velasquez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are battling for position here. Repomies manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Velasquez throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Nice uppercut lands for Velasquez. That snapped Repomies's head back.


It looks like Rauno Repomies has been cut.
Velasquez tries for a takedown but Repomies sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Repomies swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Velasquez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Repomies is fending him off so far but Velasquez persists. Nope, Repomies circles away and we're back to standing.
Velasquez swings for the body but Repomies moves out of range.
Velasquez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Repomies throws out a leg kick but Velasquez moves out of range and Repomies only half commits.
Velasquez connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Repomies tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

and Repomies counters with a big head kick but Velasquez shrugs it off.
Repomies darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Velasquez shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Repomies connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Repomies takes a swing at Velasquez's ribcage but misses.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Velasquez is defended easily by Repomies.

A countering left hand to the body from Repomies misses.

and Repomies counters with a lovely straight right hand!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rauno Repomies showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Velasquez fails with the takedown
and Repomies counters with a nice uppercut.
Repomies scores with the left hand. Velasquez knows he should have avoided that one.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Repomies.
Velasquez feinted with a counter takedown.

Repomies feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Velasquez sprawling to the canvas! Velasquez rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Repomies finish him?!


Velasquez is rocked!
Velasquez throws a left and a right that both miss
and Repomies counters with a nice low kick that buckles Velasquez's knee momentarily.
Oh Velasquez is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Velasquez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Velasquez seems to have got his legs back now.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Repomies drops Velasquez with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Velasquez looks back up at him and smiles so Repomies waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.
Velasquez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Repomies swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cain Velasquez. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Repomies sends Velasquez crashing to the mat with a devastating uppercut! Repomies is motioning to the referee to let Velasquez up. He wants to try and finish this one on the feet!
Velasquez dives in for a single leg takedown but Repomies sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Velasquez drops his hands for a split second and Repomies immediately capitalizes on the opportunity by smashing a powerful hook into Velasquez face, sending his mouthguard sailing through the air, much to the delight of the crowd. Repomies follows up with a right hand that knocks Velasquez into next week. He's out cold and this fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Rauno Repomies!
Rauno Repomies decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
