The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Shirou Masuda and Yasuomi Hirokawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vazquez fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Bruens stuffs the takedown attempt from Vazquez. Vazquez gets slowly back to his feet.
Bruens throws out a counter right but Vazquez avoids it with no problem.
Bruens fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Vazquez manages to avoid it.
Vazquez has been working on his balance at Tokyo Totally Gym + Sauna, so perhaps that has help him stuff some of the takedown attempts by Bruens.
Bruens shoots in for a takedown but Vazquez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Vazquez lands a head kick. Bruens smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Vazquez fails with an attempt to clinch.
Bruens shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Vazquez napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bruens is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Vazquez has escaped the position, nice work there.
Vazquez prevents Bruens from moving into mount.

Vazquez tries to bench press Bruens off him but Bruens keeps the position.

Bruens goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Vazquez turns into him and now he's in Bruens's guard.

Vazquez tries to bench press Bruens off him but Bruens keeps the position.

Vazquez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bruens is fending him off so far but Vazquez persists. Nope, Bruens circles away and we're back to standing.
Vazquez throws a right and a left that both miss.
And Bruens tries to counter it with a takedown but Vazquez pushes his down on his head and steps out.

Vazquez scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
A combination from Vazquez does no damage.
Bruens throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Vazquez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

and Vazquez counters with a one-two to the body.

Bruens darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Let's hope that Bruens has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Vazquez is trying to stand back up but Bruens is controlling him

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Bruens prevents Vazquez from improving his position.
Bruens lands with a punch from half guard.
Bruens seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Vazquez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Bruens looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Bruens shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Vazquez wants to improve his position but Bruens is controlling well.

Bruens uses his free foot to push down on Vazquez's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Vazquez.
