The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith stuffs the takedown attempt from Thornton. Thornton gets slowly back to his feet.

Smith clinches with his opponent.

Smith has picked Thornton up - he's going for a ride! Smith dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Mark Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Thornton shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Thornton will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Smith is trying is best to control the position here.

Thornton stalling away here and it's allowed Smith to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Thornton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Smith has his hands on Thornton's head, controlling the position.

Smith throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Smith thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Thornton closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Smith's guard.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Smith wants to stand but Thornton has his arm trapped.
Thornton is looking for a sweep.

Smith is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Thornton looks calm but he's in trouble here. Smith gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Thornton is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Smith lets go of the hold and Thornton can pop his arm back in it's socket.
