PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Michael (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bruce Patterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Patterson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Let It Burn. Bruce Patterson will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chuck Michael!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bruce Patterson!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Patterson misses with a takedown attempt

and Michael counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Patterson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Michael doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Michael manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Patterson controls Michael momentarily but Michael frees himself.
Patterson has a closed guard, preventing Michael from standing up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patterson is striking but Michael is not phased and passes to half guard.
Michael wants to get back to his feet.

Michael gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Patterson with a lazy takedown attempt
and Michael counters with a head kick.

Patterson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Michael looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Michael is looking for a sweep.
Patterson gets to mount! Michael was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Patterson misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Patterson looking to control but Michael is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Michael is desperately trying to improve his position but Patterson has a good base and remains in mount.
Michael sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Michael is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Patterson jumps into side control!
Michael tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Patterson looking to control but instead Michael has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Patterson is looking to take a break and control but Michael is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Michael moves into full guard.
Patterson trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Patterson wants to control from the top but Michael keeps moving.
Michael looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Michael is on top in guard.

Michael tries to stand but Patterson is controlling from the bottom.

Michael trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Patterson wants to stand and escape but Michael is having none of it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Michael shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Patterson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Chuck Michael will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Patterson is defended easily by Michael.
Michael throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Michael goes for a double leg but Patterson avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Patterson continues to drive forward.

Patterson is fighting off a takedown attempt but Michael is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Patterson to the mat. Patterson regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Michael wants to stand but Patterson has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Patterson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Michael is one step ahead there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Patterson keeps trying to improve his position.
Michael wanted to stand there but Patterson had control of the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Patterson wants to control the position but Michael says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Patterson is trying to get back to full guard.

Patterson is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Michael is staying active.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Bruce Patterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Patterson misses with the body kick
and Michael counters with a big head kick but Patterson shrugs it off.
Michael tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Patterson swivels and escapes.

and Michael holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Patterson is breathing heavily.
Michael has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Patterson after a bit of a struggle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chuck Michael. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Michael lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Michael seems to be working for a kimura but Patterson defends the submission attempt.
Patterson trying to hold on to Michael's head to control him but Michael postures up.
Patterson tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Michael seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Patterson wants to get back to his feet.

Patterson has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Michael escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Michael!

Michael is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Patterson is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
You can see the frustration on Patterson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Michael decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Patterson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chuck Michael dominated that second round.

Patterson tries to pull guard but Michael holds him up against the cage and eventually Patterson drops back down to his feet.
Patterson struggles to land a body shot inside as Michael controls his hands.
Michael jumps guard but Patterson stands there with Michael around his waist. Michael gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Michael changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Patterson fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Michael has picked Patterson up - he's going for a ride! Michael dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Michael wants to stand but Patterson has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

Michael stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Patterson to get to his feet.
Patterson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Patterson does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Patterson lands a nice looking body kick.
Chuck Michael is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Michael tries to keep at a distance but Patterson has taken the fight into the clinch.
Patterson prevents the takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Michael has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Patterson is trying to keep an underhook but Michael manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Patterson wants to get back to full guard.

Michael postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Patterson to stand up.

Patterson closes the distance and clinches.
Patterson drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Michael tries to score a body lock takedown but Patterson shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Patterson wants the takedown. Michael is fighting it off but Patterson persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Michael's guard against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Patterson prevents Michael from improving his position.

Patterson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Michael does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Michael tries to roll over but Patterson keeps him under control.
Michael gets full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Patterson is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Michael is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Michael has escaped and now he's on top!

Michael stands up over Patterson, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Michael would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Bruce Patterson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Chuck Michael is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

And that's the end of the fight!
Chuck Michael showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Michael has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
