PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Shane Doby (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter McBain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Doby comes to the cage accompanied by International Players Anthem. The crowd seem to be enjoying McBain's choice of entrance music: Harder Than You Think by Public Enemy. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Shane Doby!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Peter McBain!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Ian Loll and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A combination from McBain does no damage.
Doby ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
McBain throws a series of punches but Doby avoids them all with ease.
Doby lands a nice looking body shot.
McBain pushes Doby away with a front kick.
Doby throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around McBain's waist but McBain gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Doby off to one side.
Doby throws a body shot but no joy.
Doby avoids a punch combination nicely.
McBain looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Doby shoots in and gets a takedown into McBain's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Doby postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

McBain wants to stand up but Doby is controlling him.

Doby seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
McBain keeping moving, preventing Doby from controlling successfully.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Doby accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Peter McBain is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
McBain keeps the fight on the outside.
McBain displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
McBain throws a leg kick

and Doby counters with a takedown into side control.
Doby taking a break here but McBain is having none of it and regains half guard.

Doby is looking for a kimura here.
Doby is figuring out what he wants to do next.
McBain avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Doby.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Doby is working for a kimura here but McBain manages to reverse the position and he's now in Doby's guard.

Doby is looking for a triangle here but McBain uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Doby manages to work his way to half guard, despite McBain's best efforts.

Doby tries to roll over but McBain keeps him under control.
Doby is trying to maintain the position but McBain is very close to passing his half guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Shane Doby will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Doby closes this distance looking for a takedown but McBain circles away.
McBain lands with a shot to the body.
McBain throws a nice looking combination but Doby bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
McBain misses the jab.
McBain scores with a hook.
Peter McBain seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
McBain works the jab nicely.
Doby showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from McBain.
Doby changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Doby misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Doby throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. McBain was covering up waiting for the punch and Doby finishes the takedown easily into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Doby misses with a hook.
A little jabbing left from McBain on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.

No joy there for McBain, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Doby digs a good body shot into McBain's ribs.
McBain walks into a jab.
Doby pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Doby shoots in for a double leg but McBain sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Shane Doby. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Doby connects with a nice looking jab.
Doby fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

McBain escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
McBain displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Doby.
McBain throws a series of punches but Doby avoids them all with ease.

Doby looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Doby wants to advance to full mount but McBain doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
McBain wants to stand and escape but Doby is having none of it.
Doby is pushing down on McBain's leg trying to pass to half guard. McBain is fighting to maintain full guard but Doby has managed to sneak the leg through.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

McBain looks like he's trying to stand up.

Doby looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
McBain felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Doby throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
McBain pushes Doby off looking to stand but Doby dives back in and keeps control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That was a close second round but I would say that Shane Doby will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


McBain on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
McBain lands with a kick to the temple. Doby shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
McBain throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
McBain tries a head kick but it misses.
McBain misses with a two punch combination.
McBain stuffs the takedown attempt from Doby. Doby gets slowly back to his feet.
McBain is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Horrible takedown attempt by Doby or perhaps it was just good defense by McBain, which made it look bad.
McBain throws a series of strikes that have Doby backpedaling.
McBain tries to bum rush Doby with a series of wild strikes but Doby uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Doby shoots in for a double leg but McBain sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Doby connects with a good right hand that stumbles McBain. McBain circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Doby walks forward, straight into a front kick from McBain.

Oh Doby is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

McBain ducks under a wild hook from Doby.

Doby is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in McBain's half guard.
Doby seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McBain does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Doby looks to land a strike but McBain avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Doby manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McBain manages to get himself to full guard.

Doby throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McBain works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Doby postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! McBain is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Doby, into his guard.

Doby wants to control but McBain passes easily into half guard.

Doby regains full guard. Nicely done.
Doby wants to sweep here but McBain controlling him for the moment.
Doby is trying to control the position but McBain postures up.
Doby is looking to sweep but instead, McBain has passed into half guard.

McBain stands up from half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Doby thuds a left hand into McBain's body.
Doby feints a jab promting McBain to slip. Doby then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. McBain slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Doby drives through with a takedown into guard.

McBain kicks Doby off and gets to his feet.
Shane Doby is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
McBain rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Doby moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Doby connects with a jab.

McBain gets caught flat footed, as Doby shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Doby trying to control but McBain is working from the bottom.
Doby working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Peter McBain.
I think Doby has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Peter McBain spoke after the fight, saying 'I want to thank all you fans for coming out tonight, Fury for helping me be strong, Modern Wear Apparel for making me look so good, the gang at Montreal Fighter's Gym, all of my loved ones back home, and Kyle F for letting me fight here in the HMFL!! I really wanted the win tonight, I'll get it n'.
