The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Asashoryu throws a lazy right hand but Ruanti sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Asashoryu misses with a looping left.
Ruanti drops his hands momentarily and Asashoryu takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

It looks like Daniel Ruanti has been cut.
Asashoryu scores with the left hand. Ruanti knows he should have avoided that one.
A big right from Ruanti misses.
Ruanti slips a jab from Asashoryu.
Asashoryu lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ruanti circles away quickly and effectively.
Ruanti scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Asashoryu misses with a wild combination.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A cross from Ruanti lands.

Ruanti closes the distance and pushes Asashoryu back into the cage.

Ruanti manages to break the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ruanti throws a good cross that connects.

Asashoryu steps into range and cracks Ruanti with a monster punch that buckles his knees! Ruanti flops backwards and Asashoryu dives into his guard looking to finish!

Ruanti is rocked!
Asashoryu sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ruanti's guard.
Oh Ruanti is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Ruanti wants to control but Asashoryu is keeping busy.
Ruanti seems to have got his legs back now.
Asashoryu trying to mount his opponent but Ruanti defends it.

Asashoryu looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Asashoryu is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Ruanti is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

After winning the bout, Yokozuna Asashoryu thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
