PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Steven Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Malenko (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Steven Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joe Malenko!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Stewart Dunkirk and Frank Dennis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brown tries to clinch but Malenko moves away

and Malenko counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Brown tries to throw a body punch but Malenko avoids it by throwing Brown back against the cage.

Malenko gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Brown regains guard.
Malenko postures up.
Brown keeping full guard, as Malenko tries to pass.
Malenko not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Brown knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Malenko on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Brown is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Brown tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Brown doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Malenko counters with a nice double leg into side control. Brown won't be happy with that.

Malenko remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Let's hope that Malenko has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Malenko throws a strike aimed at the side of Brown's head but Brown avoids it well.
Malenko moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Brown is looking to clinch but Malenko is avoiding it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Brown closes the distance but Malenko moves to the side

and Malenko counters with a shoot takedown. Brown fights it but they end up in guard.
Brown wants to get back to his feet but Malenko is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Malenko is stalling in the full guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Brown moves to clinch but Malenko breaks away

and Malenko counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Malenko slows the pace down in half guard.
Brown keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Malenko throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Malenko keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Malenko is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Brown defends it well.

Malenko is continuing to stall.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Malenko tries to pass to full mount but Brown defends it.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

and Malenko counters by moving into the clinch.
Brown is trying to break the clinch but Malenko is controlling him.
Brown is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Brown stops a takedown attempt from Malenko.
Brown lands a hook to the side of the head.
Malenko misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Brown.
Brown pushes Malenko back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Brown successfully pulls guard.
Brown not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Brown can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Malenko controls the pace.
Malenko looking to pass the guard.
Brown avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Malenko engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Malenko throws a lazy uppercut
and Brown counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Brown wants to clinch

and Malenko counters with a single leg into guard. Brown didn't expect that.
Malenko controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Malenko throws a big elbow that misses.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Malenko won't allow Brown to get back to his feet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Malenko accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Malenko showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

and Malenko counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Malenko's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The adventures of Malenko the control monster continue. Boring.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Malenko fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Steven Brown is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Horrible takedown attempt by Malenko or perhaps it was just good defense by Brown, which made it look bad.

and Malenko counters with a shoot takedown. Brown fights it but they end up in guard.

More stalling from Malenko.

Malenko working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Brown rushes Malenko and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Malenko turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Malenko manages to end up in side control.
Malenko controls the position.
Malenko lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Malenko takes a little break here. Brown wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Joe Malenko comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Malenko winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
