PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mike Roll (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Aries (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Roll's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Limp Bizkit - Rollin'. Nathan Aries told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Roll!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nathan Aries!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Franklyn Lucas and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Aries has taken the fight to the clinch.
Aries tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Roll just stands there and leans against the cage.

Aries pulls guard effortlessly.
Roll stands and throws Aries's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Roll tries to advance to mount but Aries denies him.

Roll tries for a kimura but Aries is defending well.
Roll tries to advance to mount but Aries denies him.
Roll scores with punches from side control.
Aries wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.

Roll tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Roll wants to lay and pray for a moment but Aries keeps working.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Aries tries to buck Roll off but Roll is having none of it.
The ground and pound from Roll seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Roll wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Aries, who protects the arm well.
Aries tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.

Roll jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Aries manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Aries tries to improve position but can't.
Aries really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Roll. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Aries is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Roll working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Roll is breathing heavily.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Roll trying to control the position but Aries is working away.
Aries is trying to buck Roll off.
Roll working the ground and pound from side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Aries dodges the ground and pound from Roll.
Aries wants to control but Roll postures up.
Roll postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
You can see the frustration on Aries's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Aries is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Aries gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Aries is on top in guard.
Aries wants to control from the top but Roll keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Roll dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Aries misses with a jab, cross combination.

Roll has managed to clinch.
Aries prevents a takedown attempt there.
Roll is trying to drag Aries to the mat but Aries just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Roll gets control of Aries's arms and successfully pulls guard. Roll will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Roll looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Aries trying to control but Roll is working from the bottom.
Aries controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Aries wants to control from the top but Roll keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Aries must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Roll working for a triangle but Aries defends it easily.
Roll has a closed guard, preventing Aries from standing up.
Aries stopping the sweep attempt from Roll.
Aries sitting in guard, not really doing much.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Aries pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Roll is keeping the position for now.
Roll tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Aries slips nicely into half guard.
Roll is trying to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Aries seems to be working for a kimura but Roll defends the submission attempt.
Aries prevents Roll from improving his position.

Roll looking for submissions off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Roll wants to clinch
and Aries connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Aries misses with a takedown

and Roll counters with a shoot takedown. Aries fights it but they end up in guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Roll drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Roll jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Aries working a defensive guard but Roll manages to pass into side control anyway.

Roll tries for a kimura but Aries is defending well.
Roll trying to control the position but Aries is working away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Roll controls the position from side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Roll dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!



Roll gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Roll is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Aries trying to control but Roll is working from the bottom.
Aries wants to get up but he can't break Roll's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Roll has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Aries doesn't defend quickly enough and Roll has managed to lock this one up! Can Aries escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Roll on a fantastic submission victory.
