PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Norman Barry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Edson Barboza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Norman Barry has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Norman Barry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Edson Barboza!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Daniel Cesar and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barboza throws a leg kick but Barry sees it coming and moves out of range.
Barry avoids the head kick by Barboza.
Barboza misses with a double jab

and Barry counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Barry.
Barry tries to pull guard but Barboza won't allow it.
Barry throws a knee to the head but misses.
Barboza wants a takedown but no success here.

Barboza is fighting off a takedown attempt but Barry is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Barboza to the mat. Barboza regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Barry stands and steps away. Barboza gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Barboza enables Barry to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Barboza manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Barboza is looking to stand back up but Barry counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Barboza.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Barry controlling the pace.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Barry lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Ground and pound from Barry.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Barry is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Barboza wants to get back to his feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Norman Barry just wasn't active enough.
Barboza misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Barboza throws a sloppy head kick and Barry moves out of range easily.
Barboza stuffs the takedown attempt from Barry. Barry gets slowly back to his feet.
Good shot there by Barboza.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Barboza throws a low kick, looking for Barry's leg but Barry calmly moves out of range.
Barboza misses with the combination.
Barboza looks winded!
Barry throws a nice looking combination but Barboza bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Barboza throws a sloppy head kick

and Barry holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Barry is trying to pull guard but Barboza turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Norman Barry. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Barry tries to pull guard but Barboza holds him up against the cage and eventually Barry drops back down to his feet.

Barboza breaks from the clinch.
Barry getting the better of the striking in that exchange.

Barry fails with the takedown

and Barboza counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Barboza with a flurry of punches that miss.

Barry uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Barry shoots for a takedown but Barboza saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Barboza stuffs the takedown attempt from Barry. Barry gets slowly back to his feet.

Barry looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Barry is taking a breather. Barboza says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Norman Barry dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Barboza throws a right and a left that both miss.
Barboza misses with a wild combination.
Barboza throws a combination. Barry tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Barboza stuffs the takedown.
Barboza throws a combination that misses
and Barry counters with a series of strikes. Barboza will be more careful next time no doubt.
Barboza is breathing heavily.
Barry avoids the head kick by Barboza.
Barry fails with the takedown.

Barboza throws a head kick that misses.
Edson Barboza seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Barry will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Barry throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Barboza.
Barboza misses with a two punch combination.
Norman Barry is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Barry moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Barboza lands with a kick to the temple. Barry shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

A head kick misses from Barboza.
Barry tries to clinch up but Barboza circles away and keeps his distance.
Barry shoots in looking for a takedown but Barboza manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Barry's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Barboza throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Barry scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Barry seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Barboza is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:54 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Norman Barry!
